That would be a diesel from locomotive at idle. Shakes the ground anywhere near it.

Runner ups: Jet engines, Wankel's, and any engine with a turbo

, I also have a softspot for inline 6's

The sound a couple of EMD SD-45 Diesel Locomotives makes running for all their worth!

Nothing like a 20 cylinder diesel displacing 645 cubic inches per cylinder to shake a little ground!

Two F111's doing a dual crossover dump-and-burn over Lake Burley Griffin which happened recently here in Canberra at night no less. English Electric Lightning going vertical with full re-heat is pretty good as well.

Nothing beats peace and quiet. Well maybe an engine firing up after it has been sitting out in the bitter cold a long time, and long ways from anything.

Actually that seems to be less of an issue now with FI and 5w30.

I actually like the recognizable sound of the old VW Beatle boxer engine. And when the exhaust falls off, which invariably happens at some point, then the Bug sounds like a tank.

I have always wondered what was the high pitched sound in old VW boxers? Was it the fan or was it something else?

Three or four turbodiesel v-16 train engines pulling about 100 loaded cars up a grade.

And it is especially interesting to hear multiple diesel engines coming through a multi-mile train tunnel. I best describe it as a sub-sonic vibration.
