I was raised in Boyertown until the age of 12..we lived on Franklin St. In the old days There was no Zerns there. What they had was the "Sale" at Gilbertsville out on route 73 East of Boyertown. Is that the same place??

Last summer I remember I was "overdue" for my 3 week haircut so impulsively, I went to an upscale salon near my office because they had an opening that afternoon. Very chic looking place. Stylists in full black with special tool belts to hold their quiver of scissors (I learned each costs $250 and up!), funky lights, and black granite mirrors, which reflected surprisingly well. Anyways, final tab came to $50+T…gulp!

A couple of years ago I used to go to Supercuts and pay $10+T. Most times, it would be good, but once in a while I would get a rookie that would do a number on me, so I stop going. The stylist I go to now charges $18 which is still high but acceptable.

My wife on the other hand is in overdrive. She has 2 stylists. The "Shaper", a.k.a. hair cutter, charges $75 and the Color Consultant who foils and highlights her hair charges $140 for full highlights and $90 for a half foil (I guess you alternate between the full and half foils every 3 weeks). She has a "disposable" income account just for things like this so I don't lose my lid. To each their own, I guess. I buy tools, electronic gadgets and Mobil 1, so I guess I can't say squat

Pablo, my stylists (and I assume most) gets "waiter's pay", something like $2.75/hr so tips is how she makes money. So when I get a cut, she gets $3 and the house gets $15. I tip her $6 so she ends up with $9 for my hour. For good service I always tip 20% minimum because I've been there, done that (waiter and bar tender in college).

In any major city there are places for $3-4 haircuts. Everytime I visit LA or houston I make sure I get my haircut.I get mine cut every week. I usually pay in my homeotwn $10 which $500 or so a year. Which is not bad if you really think about it.

I bought a Robocut a couple of years ago and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. I can cut it whenever I want (no waiting in line), it does as good (if not better) than the barbers I went to, and it paid for itself in about 9 months.

At first I was a little nervous doing my own hair but it's really simple and quick.

Went to the PX today and I noticed it went from $5.85 to $6.10. It's getting rediculous. I know that's a bunch less than a civilian. (I paid $10 for one a few weeks ago).

I get a hair cut at least every 2 weeks sometimes more if I have to look good for duty. Anyhow that's at least 25 hair cuts a year.

(AND PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PRICE OF AMSOIL)

What do you get for $6.10?
A Timothy McVeigh special? LOL

BTW,I already get my haicut at the Cotton Corral

Try again on that one the industry average is %50 on the service. A $20 haircut gets the stylist $10 plus the tip. I know at the shop I get my hair cut at there isn't a stylist in there that isn't making $16 to $20 per hour with tips. The place is busy 6 days a week and there are something like 16 stylists working there.

I cut my own, not too difficult with electric clippers, a big bathroom mirror, and a hand mirror (to help me see when I cut the back). Of course I do keep my hair pretty short, but it does have some style beyond a simple crew-cut. Haven't been to a haircut place or a barber in probably 5 or so years.

Yea I started doing this last year myself, when unemployed you start looking for all kinds of ways to save money. I had a barber shop haircut yesterday and I think my own haicuts look jst as good as the one from yesterday. No-one else seems to notice the difference either. Plus when I do it, it turns out pretty much the way I want it.

I believe so. If you came off of Rt. 100 and headed Rt. 73 east ..it would be on the righthand side. This is outside of Boyertown proper. It's only open (I believe still) Friday and Saturday (maybe Thursday too). They still have the livestock auction ...and I think the used car auction. It's basically a flea market now. There are butchers and bakers ..and

a few candle stick makers. Veg stands and food vendors. Since Boyertown lost the casket works and the truck body works ..it's mainly a bedroom community now.

When my wife and I went there before we were married ...we felt like we had fallen into the Twilight Zone. Everyone there could quickly tell that we were "outlanders". The true rural culture appeared to be alive and well at Zern's. There's still enough farmland around to keep the TSC's and farmer markets open.

Now Ron, we know that's a lie. At least in the movies!

I believe Mr.Jeremy is awake in most of his movies.

Cut it yourself with clippers and some guards. It sounds as if you wear it very short, which makes it easy.

I don't pay for oil changes and I don't pay for haircuts.

Thankfully my wife cuts my hair. She trained as a hairdresser before ditching that occupation for the IT field. She'll even sleep with me occasionally, which is something most other styists have refused to do in the past.

My last couple of haircuts were homemade with a razor and shaving gel but my wife dosent like it so I guess I will go back to my barber. She is currently charging $8 a cut + tip, which is up $2 since last time I had it cut. I dont feel that she is charging an outrageous price compared to some other barbers in this area. (my wife pays $55 + tip to get her hair done, thats the reason I decided to cut my own hair in the first place, I was going broke paying for hers every 2 weeks.)

Well my thing is how long does it take to give a hair cut? It usually less than 10 minutes. Heck if you had someone in the chair for 10 mintutes you could do 6 cuts an hour. At $10 a wack that's $60/hour. I might learn to do hair, I could make a killing charging $5

I am not picking on you msparks,I just wanted to say that this doesnt always work.

I go to a barber where I live that charges $8.00 for a mans haircut,he doesnt cut womens hair.

This guy does a great job.

He loses business to the other shops that have a 'pretty girl' that cuts hair.

He has made statements about this more than once.

He charges a cheap price, may be the cheapest in town yet he doesnt get the business he would like.

As I said,he does a great job, best haircut I have gotten in years.

The 'pretty girl' gets the most business.

Yea, I don't either. Usually I have some mid-level manager givin' me **** because he, or someone above made a bad decision. Give me personal intimate service, if I give you a tip, be grateful. People a lot richer than me owe you.

Couple of things on Tips. I don't tip barbers or bar maids. Something I just don't understand, they are there working, if there weren't getting paid enough why would they still be there.

The tip jar sounds to me like a way to get around paying taxes.

I wish I could learn to give myself a haircut, it would be awesome and I would probably do it every week. I love the feeling of a fresh hair cut (I wear basically a crew cut)

Well, I only do for exceptional service. I've had barbers just give me a haircut. They get the flat fee. I've had others that actually give me a "grooming" so to speak (mustache, eyebrows, ear fuzzies beyond just the wild growth). My barmaids and tenders (when I was able to drink hard liquor) tipped that bottle jeeest a little more liberally when they were "taken care of" by one customer over another. I never went to a bar to save money and for the $0.25 that I left on the bar, I got paid in spades at the retail level. Then again, I never went to a bar to have a drink or two. We were usually there for the evening and were dropping $250-$300 for two couples. I would rack up about 14 mixed drinks over the evening (we were walking home, obviously).

Sparky,
I want to see pictures of that "rip-off" haircut!

BTW, my "buzz" haircuts are between $4-$6 in a "poorer" part of town. Where I live, haircuts are $10+.
