$3.69/gal here. It just keeps going up and up. Strangely enough, a 10 minute drive, I can still find gas for $3.33/gal. Wonder if the 10 minutes of driving is worth the $.40/gal savings.
When "chasing gas" it's a function of miles out of the way, cruising range of your vehicle, and percentage of money saved.
300 mile cruising range... 6 mile out of the way round trip...
6/300= 2% extra fuel used, worth the 10% savings.
It's not whether the car's a guzzler as long as the size of its tank makes up for it.
Naturally what works on a microeconomic scale of one person, does not help on a macro level where all these people chasing gas are creating added demand on an inelastic commodity.
Gas stations are out of gas left and right in CO Spgs right now. The refinery fire in OK and one in Texas that still hasn't come back on line are killing us, but gas is still only ("only"!) $3/gallon. I have a feeling it's gonna sky rocket in the coming days here.
That's assuming you are on empty. If you are like me and are adverse to going too far below 1/2, then your savings are lower.
I just look for BP stations along my route, as I get 5% rebates on my Chase BP Visa card. So as gas approaches $3/gallon, my real cost is $2.85/gallon.
I'm earning two $25 gift cards every three months with this card.
