What's the verdict on Windows 10?

For those of you that have been using the preview versions what do you think of it and how does it compare to Windows 7, and 8.1?

I was really hoping that MS would allow users to simply choose
a desktop based UI or other when first registering and setting up the software. While you can still boot to desktop in 8.1 you still have annoying interfaces to deal with....

Also important to me, will they be bringing back the traditional start menu? I have to say the Win 8/8.1 method of reaching those items in the start menu drove me crazy, and I am not a fan of using other programs like Start 8 to alter such a basic part of the system, in the end there is always problems.

+1 Then wait a few months after the product is actually released. From what I've seen it looks a lot better than Win 8.1.

I loaded it up and test drove it a bit. It interfaced more like 7 than 8/8.1. But alas I dumped it quickly since it wasn't playing nice with an older ATI X800 video card (driver issue). My gut impression is it is something that I would replace windows 7 with. I tried out 8.1 and I'm just going to skip that.
 
Thanks for all the replies so far. That was my impression from
the forums I've visited like Eightforums.com and Sevenforums.com
the professional IT folks there seem to see a lot of promise in
10 RTM vs the cluster fork that is 8/8.1.

I will say that 8.1 is snappy, very rapid responses even compared to Win 7, but the annoyances are enough to drive me away even so.
 
Mostly incremental changes from Windows 8.1 - moving the Start Menu closer to what Windows 7 users want.

I tried it for about a week, then had to go back to 8.1 due to some unidentified background process using lots of CPU cycles and running down the battery in my laptop in an hour (instead of the 4 I get with 8.1).

I've been 100% satisfied with 8.1 (with Start8). I don't ever see that Metro/Modern tiled page. Ever. It's just like Windows 7, but without the 3-dimensional glass look to the windows.

I look forward to 10. I'm sure I'll like it even more than 8.1.

I've heard here and there that MS is considering 10 being a low-cost/no-cost option for those still on XP or perhaps 7. I've yet to see any validation to those rumors.

You can credit me for this quote because I have never read it anywhere. In most cases, beta testers are paid, or get free software to evaluate. Microsoft is the only company I know of that uses its paying customers as beta testers. LOL

To be fair, I think the "mobile" mentality has conditioned consumers to accept software that is still truly in development. To that end, I think nearly every company that develops software on mobile devices is putting software in the hands of consumers that has not been tested as rigorously as software has in the past. It's daily that I get updates to software on my mobile phone. It's from Google, it's from Microsoft, it's from whomever makes the USA Today app, my local news station's app, whomever makes the apps for USAA, Vanguard, Fidelity, PayPal, eBay, etc. All of these apps are relatively buggy and get patched on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

The main distinction between Microsoft and these apps is the consumer isn't directly buying them...but we are paying for them with our time, our advertising views, etc.

The main distinction is that those mobile apps are, in many cases, doing things that haven't been done before. Software engineers are still trying to figure out the best way to do things, and trial and error is an integral part of the process.

Microsoft, on the other hand, still can't get stuff right that's been industry standard for 15 years.
 
Tried Windows 10 on a virtual machine. Perfomance was stellar! Win7 had a slight performance increase over XP. Win8 also had a smaller performance increase over Win7. In fact the older your hardware, the bigger the speed difference.

Although Win10 was running on a virtual machine, I was wholly impressed by the speed. I plan on trying the Customer Preview on real hardware.

And yes, the full screen start Metro menu is not a default on desktops. A disclaimer, because of the Win8's speed, I was a fan of it, but HATED how they force that full screen metro interface on mouse users.

This is my experience as well. Dump Metro and load Start8 and you will have the fastest version of Windows 7 ever created. I have had no problems with Win8/8.1.

The only problem I had of consequence with Windows 8.1
is with the fast start up and sleep functions they don't always cause problems but there is still occassional errors which cause delays in awaking from sleep.
 
I've read Microsoft wants to make Windows 10 a subscription service/ Wha WHAT??? If they do that en masse with all future operating systems, it will be a tragedy.

If they want to do that it's fine with me.... I'm glad I stopped using Windows for good a year ago. I don't have to care or deal with their nonsense anymore.

FWIW, I have found quite the opposite. The "Online Accounts" function in Ubuntu (and other Gnome-based distros) and common Software Center make this OS about as seamless as I could want.

I actually use Linux Mint. LOL

But there are certain programs I use that will only function with Windows.

Now defaming me is against the forum rules, but if you delete that part of your post I might not report you to the mods or Helen. LOL
