What's the difference between Valvoline Maxlife ATF and Extended Protection ATF?

Also can you mix them? I'm just seeing the MAX Life Multi-Vehicle at walmart. Extended Protection has the same Lifeguard 6/8/9 rating. Can I mix and match if just doing a fluid flush?

Anymore discussion on the difference between these two ATFs? I’m discouraged to use the new formula VML (red bottle) that also includes CVTs and more inclined to use the Extended Protection ATF since it isn’t recommended for CVT in my 5 and 6 speed Honda transmissions.

Late to the party, but I had the same thought process as you - the whole steel-on-steel friction modifier thing is a bit counter-intuitive to me when it's going into a traditional step-shift.

I've run both the red bottle ML AT/CVT formula and gray bottle EP without issue though. I've gravitated towards using the EP, as I noticed a nice improvement in shift quality over Fuchs' Lifeguard 8 dupe when I dumped some into my ZF 8P75H. Seems like a fine fluid with a well-regarded Infineum additive pack.
