What's the best 20w50 out there?

Best 20W50 ?

Mobil 1 V-Twin - HTHS is way too high for you really.

Mobil 1 15W50 would be my choice if 50 is what he wants.
 
Mobil 1 15w50 is not nearly as good as it used to be in its red-cap days.

It doesn't hold a candle to Amsoil Z-Rod 20/50, or if you want to go conventional, Valvoline VR1 Silver bottle (street legal).

M1 redcap was legendary from what I've read. I'm guessing it was a PAO?
 
Well there is best, and then there is what you can buy locally ... Best is prolly LAT or Redline, but you'll be ordering on line and it may be $20/qt ...

Best locally available would be Valvoline VR1 which is at places like AutoZone, etc.

Standard conventional oil that has kept many hot-rodded Harley's alive for years is Castrol GTX 20W-50. It was the go-to oil for most modified street engines ...

Don't know, but the new formula is a shear fairy. Boat engines and motorcycles eat that stuff up like it's candy.

I forgot to add one very good one to the list: Schaeffer Micron Moly. It delivers oil temps a lot lower than the other 20/50's.
 
Pennzoil conventional (Pennzoil conventional) is probably one of the very best conventional oils out there. Mobil 1 15W-50 is a cheap synthetic upgrade over Pennzoil conventional.

I always use Valvoline ATF with excellent results, but I am not a fan of their motor oils because their additive packages are weak -- no moly, low TBN, etc. Also, Valvoline NextGen failed the NOACK test according to PQIA.

haha, After 60 years of Performance engine builds here, The life of a engine with 0w-20 weight oil would be measured in minutes on the dyno compared to a engine filled with 20w-
50 oil.
 
He might also wake up and realize that a simple oil analysis tells you only a little about how an oil is formulated.
Kind of makes you wonder whether some blenders go big on the additives you can see and scrimp on those that you can't.
 
But high end oils like Redline,etc have a really heavy old school add pack that you can see on voa/uoa. Always lots of zinc and moly.

Oh so true. Some guys in the Pro-Stock world will actually sacrifice a motor with XW-20 knowing it will eat itself, but reaching for that last 4 HP. If they are heavily sponsored, they can afford this strategy ... I can't so it ain't happening to my motors.

You need an oil appropriate to the mechanical contact pressures you are running. OEM MFG's never run 600# valve spring pressures on roller axles. They absolutely won't live on any 20 weight...

A topic that requires exactly no discussion.

Redline, Brad Penn, VR1, Schaeffer Micron Moly, Amsoil Z-Rod proves themselves long ago, and continue to do so today in the rooms where engines are torn down and examined piece by piece, and on the courses where these engines ran and survived.

There is no cheating us, or pulling the wool over our eyes where these lubes are concerned. If they don't actually deliver what they're supposed to, everyone will know in short order.

That's how post-redcap Mobil 1 15w50 got its current lackluster reputation. It didn't come from Blackstone or OAI. It came from the tracks and the engine rooms.

We are talking about conventional Valvoline here. Both the regular and NextGen conventional Valvoline lack moly, have low TBN, weak detergent pack, have unusual, sodium detergent, NOACK problems, etc.

Pardon my lack of use of model numbers. The #705 is the Micron Moly loaded 20-50 I was referring to.

The only alcohol I run is E85 occasionally when making benchmark dyno or track runs. Otherwise, I make more than enough juice on pump gas than I'll ever reasonably use on the street.
