Whats in it for scrappers?

Someone posted some steel pipes out on the curb on a fb group. Undoubtedly it was more than $4 worth unless they planned in using it for something else as I'd imagine steel tubing would be worth a good bit more. Anyways, we have tons of these scrappers in my area and I just don't see the logic in it.

It’s a thing in my area too. I guess if you get enough of it you can come out on ahead but otherwise it’s a waste of time and gas. Back when scrap prices were high then absolutely but now they are so low it’s simply not worth the time or hassle.

DoorDash drivers are delivering meals for $2, picking up scrap worth $4 sounds more lucrative. We live in an economy with a lot of desperate folks.

Scrapping steel & iron is a waste of time.....I load up my truck full of scrap every 2-3 months just to get rid of it. I had some dope fiends haul it off for free for awhile 'til I caught them at my shop at 3AM trying to steal stuff....

Get a load of aluminum and you got some worthwhile money there. I was surprised how much I got years ago when I brought the copper lines from my old air conditioning system to the scrap place. Automotive steel from brake rotors brings in more.

I inherited a garage with inoperable clothes dryer, fridge, and dishwasher inside. I made $18 scrapping them and it took less than an hour of my time, versus the lowest quote I could get ($220) from a local company to haul them away. Got Junk wanted at least $400.

Back when the price of scrap was up there were guys that would drive around on trash night loading up anything metal for scrap money. I haven't seen anyone doing this in years though and the current price of steel scrap isn't very high.

When I worked at an apartment complex working maintenance we had the occasional scrap dealers come around. Some wanted to charge a pick-up fee which I guess some would pay. We had a guy that would come up from an hour away to get scrap once a month. Occasionally we'd even have a washing machine or two for him. We always kept the drum and electronics However. I didn't think that a small trailer with a couple of washing machines and some copper pipes would even cover his gas.

I live in a small town, everybody knows everybody. We have a guy who is a scrapper and parks his truck out on the road in front of his house. When people in town have scrap metal we take it over and put it into his truck bed (its a farm town, everybody has a pick up). This arrangement saves him gas.

Scrap must pay better here. I know a guy that picks up old car parts with 3 trucks. Him and 2 employees.

He is able to pay his guys and afford a nice house,new Mercedes etc. His workers have been working for him for many years.

I love scrap but I look for copper and brass. Sometimes steel is a byproduct of what I'm looking for so I end up with steel. If I'm going to the scrap yard might as well load up as much as I can.

They still exist where I live, apparently. Place anything metal out by the curb and it'll be gone by sunset, usually much sooner.

I've may have been wrong all along about brake rotors..... I thought they were kind of a really-low-priced steel? Regardless, I still get rid of them by putting them out by the curb.

Everybody should have 'small' containers at home for brass and copper.
Steel and aluminum, .... I just give away.

Good way to teach children about recycling.

I work at an electrical supply house and when panels come in damaged by the freight lines we take the breakers out and they junk the panel body. It usually has copper bus bars. I take them and strip the copper bars out and I'm left with scrap steel. I just hold it until I have a truck bed full of steel. I saved all my copper up for a few years and got $1600.

i collect my used auto parts that i change. rotors, radiators control arms etc and scrap usually once every 6 months. i walk away with about $100 everytime and the material isnt going to rot in a landfill. makes me feel like im doing somewhat of my part

It's not only drugs. Some are felons that can't get a proper job and scrap has no such barriers. Well, a lot are felons due to drugs.

There used to be an old guy in an old pick up truck that drove around looking for stuff in my neighborhood. Haven't seen him lately. A friend of a friend's brother does scrap. So, I know a guy if I ever need one.
