What's hanging from your rearview?

Well, I have a tiny, silver figurine of a deer hanging from a sliver chain.
And now, my wife has festooned my Jeep's interior with various Buddhist and Shinto charms and tokens.
I can no longer pick on my Mexican friends about all the Virgin Mary and Jesus statuettes in their cars.

Down under, it's illegal to have something hanging from the mirror. But the Police generally don't enforce it unless you are young, a guy, and have a loud exhaust with a "doof-doof" stereo. (which I don't have too much of an issue with)

Mobile phone useage is similarly illegal, but most of the cops in this area drive past you in excess of the speed limit with a phone glued to their ear. I'd guess it's not THAT illegal then.

I dated a naive woman once who thought it was 'cute' that her 19yo daughter had handcuffs hanging from her mirror. I didn't even bother to explain...

Did you then consider dating her daughter?

I know, that's foul...

If it's not against the law to hang crap from your rear view mirror, it ought to be.

How can something swinging around in your field of view be tolerated?

That's my non-political view.

Gonna be a nasty old grump here, but I have a VERY compelling reason...
Most of driving is visual. When you have swinging/dancing "stuff" on your mirror, you train your eyes and brain to IGNORE any movement from the right side (here in the USA), things like cars, motorcycles, KIDS DOING WHAT KIDS DO. While sitting in a traffic jam on duty as a Paramedic, I saw a kid get hit. I saw his body fly throughg the air, hit, and slide to a stop. I was the first one to his side as he lay there bleeding and unconscious. He came through it OK, but the memory of it still brings tears as I write this, **** near eighteeen years later.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!! Don't put anything on your mirror, and if you see anyone with stuff, do your best to get them to remove it. The life you save might be a kid's.

Good thing you were there, OldDog!

Wouldn't hurt for people to slow down in parking lots and neighborhoods too. Never know when a bouncing ball is going to draw a child out from behind a parked car.

I find myself daydreaming about beating the snot out of some of the "don't give a crap about anyone else" drivers I see every day...

Nothing, I don't like stuff dangling and dancing in my view. Good point about interfering with visual sensitivity to moving objects, olddog. I've got a 9-11 rememberance sticker on the backside of the rearview, that's it.
