I think you are on to something. I used to lurk around this site long before I got interested enough to post and I agree that as the moderation has gotten heavier the number of interesting posts has decreased, especially the past year or two.

Us "older posting timers" have learned all there is to know about all-things-oil, we have evolved.... LOL!!! We are one with oil and filters, no need to try and change our minds....thicker it better!!!!

Honestly, that's it right there!

From time to time, I try and debunk a myth or two in the passenger car oil section, or show someone's "facts" are simply opinion, but my posts get drowned out in the barrage of of new posts and new members.

That is just IMHO!

The hottest debates I've read or been involved in, were all brand related - starts usually with a thread about a recall or something similar, then a few jabs at the brand from those who aren't fans of the brand (and feel the need to get that out there so everyone can benefit from that knowledge), then turns into a free for all until the inevitable lock comes.

That is absent on owner forums because everyone is driving the same thing, so even when there is hostility vented toward the brand over an issue, its coming from a frustrated owner who the other members can still sympathize with - rather the 'uh huh, see they do make garbage' type responses you see here from those - who again - aren't fans and very vocal in those threads about that.

So yeah, I think you kind of hit the nail on the head. I imagine its particularly alienating to those who are owners with a legitimate issue related to the topic, but don't dare post anything about it because they can read already from the tone of the thread, that rather than helpful or useful information, it'll simply further fuel the brand bashers or be otherwise met with scorn or ridicule.

^^^^Of course, THANK YOU!!

I have often suggested to the owners/mods of this site to make vehicle brand opinion posts verboten on this site (just as other incendiary topics are).
It would make for MUCH MORE calm and civility.

And YES, I am just as guilty of falling prey to this as the next member, as I refuse to sit quietly and still as some on here blatantly, ferociously, and a lot of the time FALSELY bash/berate the brand/marque I own, or domestic nameplates in general (many times with they themselves NEVER having owned one, ever!).
Most of the time without even anything to gain on their part (unless they work/shill for, or are HEAVILY vested in the {foreign nameplate} competition).

This is the ONLY time/situation my dander even gets up on this site.

I refuse to argue with animosity about oil/filter brands/types, etc., so I would be one of the most civil on here if the auto nameplate/brand/trade topics, etc. were totally eliminated from this here site.

How do we ascertain if a post has venom/animosity in it? By reading it, of course.

Remember that it is sometimes complete misinterpretation of someone else's mood and/or feelings. A whole bunch of this stuff is simply people assuming they know what someone else is thinking. Then getting their panties in a wad over it.

Big deal, get over it. Next problem.

Couldn't agree more.
