What filter is considered best now?

It's oil change time again, for my wife's 2017 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. I have been using Fram Synthetic Endurance, but it appears my local Walmart doesn't have it. I came here and from what little I have seen, when I can sneak on here at work, is they are no longer top dog, and some Walmarts aren't even carrying it anymore anyway. Unfortunately my time to dig through other threads is limited, even at home, with twin toddlers, so figured it might be easier to just make a thread. What are you fine people's opinions on the best filters these days? I have access to Walmart, O'reilly, Autozone, and Napa locally.

I also have a 2012 F150 5.0 with 254k, but it's not due for a change, for awhile yet, but open to suggestions for it too.

O’riley microgard select is a PG XL based filter. that is the current most consistent filter with great specs. i cut apart tons under the carquest premium name (look up carquest premium 84502 C&P on here). Napa gold’s are starting to become PG XL filters, and SOME stp XL’s depending on region are PG XL’s. the Tale tale sign of a PG EL is “leak tested” on the dome end and a silicone ADBV and O-ring wrapped in clear cellophane.

The way things are going the best oil filter is no better than the cheapest oil filter. The so-called better oil filter will only cost you more money. The best oil with the cheapest oil filter is better than the cheapest oil with the best oil filter.

Maybe fantastic can show me the popcorn thing, is there Butter in that Popcorn?

From Rock Auto's selection:
Mann, Mahle, Hengst, Denso, Champ XL, Baldwin, the various mfr extended life

Napa has the Hengst, or they should be able to order it for if your local store doesn't have it in stock :)

Autozone: STP XL

O'Reilly: Microgard Select

Amazon: Ecogard S2222

Does your Walmart still carry other Frams? If so, get an Ultra or TG, or even the orange can.

Generally, for my seasonal vehicles, Ill put on something decent during the running season such as the KN, Royal Purple, Fram ultra/endurance. For the winter season, i go with a budget minded filter such as Fram orange, supertech, ect. The ultimate deciding factor is price and being made in the USA.

The veloster gets whatever the service center has for the oil change either being Valvoline or Hyundai OEM.

There is no “best”

I’d say MICROGARD select, CQ Premium and PENTIUS PXL

Even I know to avoid the orange can. :ROFLMAO: My first instinct was just go back Fram Ultra, as I have used them before. Then I saw something on here those having issues with leaks. I have a Fram Ultra on the F150 right now, actually. Even my Cub Cadet Zero turn has a Fram Ultra right now, iirc. 😅

With the notorious Hemi tick being a possible future issue, the high mileage of my 5.0, and lack the funds to fix either, I am a bit more paranoid than I probably should be. I figure paying more for a high quality filter is worth it, and a lot cheaper than those potential repairs.

Currently running 0w40 Castrol Edge in the F150. I cannot remember what the wife's truck has now. Either 5w30 Quaker State High Mileage full syn, or Havoline 5w30 Lifelong. I know I have used one or the other in the past with it.

Why not a Mopar filter ?
I personally like the MO-339. Someone here had one with a media failure, but all brands can have issues. The louvers are always nice on mine. When this box is done, though, I’ll probably go completely PG. I just wish they’d answer my emails regarding USCAR-36. My guess is that no answer is an answer in and of itself.

I'm glad this question got asked. First time ever.

To be fair to the OP, he did ask what is the best filter “now”. With all the various QC issues we see here on a regular basis, the best filter “now” may be out of favor in a year.

As far as what is the best “now”, you can’t go wrong with the new Mobil 1’s, Pentius or ones in the PG portfolio. What they all have in common is being made in either China, South Korea or Vietnam.

Yes, that was my reason for the question. I had seen there were QC issues mentioned, but lack the time to research them all. Given the past issues I have seen regarding Motorcraft filters, and how bad the QC is on new vehicles in general these days, I don't really stop and consider any OEM filter, so using a Mopar one never crossed my mind. I work in the quality department, where I work, so I am a bit more picky in that regard, too.

Personally, I'm tired of playing " Whac-A-Mole " too. Fortunately, for me, it's only 2 filters to decide upon. A Honda and Toyota, ( well there's 2 Toyota's that use the same filter ). I've read way too many horror stories lately. Just gonna stick with OEM and be done whackin the mole. But, I will say this much, since joining BITOG in March of 25'....,,,,I had no idea all of this nonsense was going on in the oil filter world. Yeah, I knew the majority of them were coming from other countries, but had no idea the quality was in that much dire straits. Thank you all for enlightening me :) Forever in you're debt :)
