whatever happened to REAL RECYCLING?

In my neck of the wood, they have your trash can sized for the garbage collection fee, but the recycle and yard waste are free. So what happen now is that people recycle more than they throw in the trash.

They used to ask you to sort them into the right bin, but not anymore. Homeless and professional scavengers come the night before collection and take out the valuable cans and bottle, so the garbage company start taking recycles unsorted to reduce theft.

That sounds like a good motivator.

The main problem with recycling here is that trash collection is more reliable. Once my recycling can sat out for over a month before being collected. The last time was two weeks. We only ever put paper, cans, and bottles in there...per the city's instructions. We end up throwing some stuff in the trash just to get it out of the house. The city is just very slack about recycling. I think there's a local law against throwing out bottles or something like that, but it seems like most people do.

I tend to generate more than the average amount of scrap metal, so I do make occasional runs to the metal recycling place. I don't know where the metal ultimately goes, but I'm getting paid for it so I don't care. Clearly whoever is getting it is having to pay for it.

Hey 01rangerxl, yeah mom and stepdad that live near Lake Norman, tell me that you folks there recycle papers and the obvious. Think when I was down there last time; I passed a huge recycling place, not sure though.

Tried to sell some used furniture for practically nothing on Craiglist - no response at all. But when I posted the items on freecycle - had tons of interest. If you just want to get rid of stuff - use freecycle.
