What would you pick/use???

I'm getting ready for my first OCI on my newly bought Impala 08 "SS" and have another argument with my brother about the better synthetic oil. Would you use Castrol "Syntec" or Mobil 1 inthe 5w30 weight catagory. Generally I'm brand loyal but admit in the past I never had any issues using any Castrol (college years) product BUT since M1 first trial chance of their synthetic I've never turn back.

Honestly what do you think of Castrol "Syntec" and do you feel comfortable with it going to 6K OCI's???

I think it is a fine oil, but most will have issues with the "value proposition" due to use of group III in castrol before it was a mainstream thing to do.

In reality, griping over the value of group III is being very shortsighted, as the add pack adds as much cost and performance to the oil, if not more, than the basestock.

That said, IMO, Mobil 1 has better performance properties than Castrol syntec, and therefore at the same price point, does offer a performance advantage. Now, Castrol edge seems that it may be a good oil with some benefits, and lots of folks have been very happy with PP.

Even a good conventional will last 6k without issues... Much of it depends upon driving profile and style. But any syn is a fine choice to be sure.

Thanks for your honest opinion about the two synthetic oils. Iintend to have the dealership handle the OCI due to other factors that has shown up in the new car since bought and with hope they'll fix/replace them without any hassel. One being the battery has suddenly (went south) been giving me some headache as it's charge won't hold anymore and may need another new battery under warranty.

I was told I can get M1 put in but I have to request it so other than that they use as a standard Castrol "Syntec" as the dealerships alternate to dino. I know it'll cost more but generally I'm brand loyal and like M1 more but I can live with CS if I had too.

Thank you for your imputs. No matter in this case cuz I'll request M1 to be used unless they tell me otherwise. I'm pretty sure Syntec is a fine synthetic to use.

Hi Gang,

Thank you for the quick responses to my questions. At this point in time I'll see what they offer me when I take it in this coming saturday for service. Either way the least I can do is put in Castrol "Syntec" over Mobil 1 but still prefer the ladder.

This will be the first OCI for the Impala so getting it transitioned over to synthetic is a step.

The Syntec does not meet GM's requirements for High Performance engines but Mobil 1 does. I would be sure to use a synthetic oil that meets 4718M in anything with a SS badge.

As far as going 6k, I wouldnt in a SS car running Syntec. I would with something that meets 4718M like Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower, Pennziol Plat, 76 Supersyn as well as several others.

I would use the EP flavor of mobil 1 5w30.

If I read my manual correctly all that's is required is synthetic oil that meets the GM6094 specs. It doesn't say anything about using oil that is GM4718 required for my SS.

The engine specs call for an oil that's 5w30 weight and might be worried about that new fancy oil Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30.

Remember my cars still under warranty.

there's nothing fancy or to worrie about with 0w30,its a direct replacment for 5w30,,it's still a 30w when warm,your just getting the added benefits of a faster flowing oil at start up,use it theres nothing to worrie about.

Thanks for your fast reply! Your a buddy for sure What I want to do is have the ability to buy and bring them my own oil later on after my initial/first OCI. I'll talk to them first and feel them out.

For myself I'm a little [censored]-off cuz my Chevy dealership pulled out about 3 months after buying this car and they didn't tell anyone. I heard rumors that the contracted auto body shop was left out in the cold too. These guys did some GM cars of the stars here in California. NOW the closest dealership that's own buy these guys is about 30 miles away!!!! Does it make sense to get a lube oil n' filter from these guys???? Not in my book. I'm now forced to go to my brothers Cadillac dealership. They said they can handle all my needs like the banners says at ALL GM dealerships.

The Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 meets both GM specs.
