My wife just got an 05 ford explorer with the sohc 4.0 v6 and its due for an oil change. I went to my local autozone since I had a $20 gift card (nextgen rebate) and decided to get their synpower deal (get 10qts and two bosch oil filters for $58 and some change, $38 after using my giftcard). Well, they had almost no oil in stock, of any brand and tryed to tell me most got sent back in some recall. Went to the autozone the next town over and they had the synpower I needed, but were out of the bosch filters I needed, so they subbed me some Fram TG filters for them, which I was fine with, I've used them on vehicles before without a problem. Anyways, I got home and was talking to my father in law who is a tech for a ford dealer and he said not to use frams on this particular engine as the ADBV causes a valve tick and that if these things ever come in with an oil related failure and have a fram on them, warranty automatically denies the claim. Anyone ever heard of ADBV problems on these engines with the fram filters? My 08 Jeep Wrangler that I had used to have this issue at start up, especially with Mobil 1 filters, and Fram filters were actually one of the few brands that worked ok on it. So, should I see if I can return the filter (don't know if they will since it was part of an oil change special) and get my money back, maybe pickup a motorcraft filter at walmart, or should I just return everything as I'm not sure its the best deal out there right now? If I go that rought, I might just get some Quaker State Ultimate Durability at walmart for both our vehicles.

I've never heard of anything like that. I would think here at bitog if it was happening there would be some kind of info on it.

Yeah, those 4.0SOHCs make some racket on startup with a dry filter. Just getting that out of the way for when you start it after doing the oil change, it will sound like the engine is going to come apart.
Most people around here with Fords go for the Motorcraft or similar to prevent startup rattle.

Take the filters back to the first store and exchange them for the bosch if it bothers you. Autozone doesn't care which store you use.
I like Motorcraft filters in my Fords. Though I have had great results with Bosch.

Same engine that`s in my gf`s 07 Mustang (one of Ford`s best engines imo). I use Synpower 10W30 and a Motorcraft filter. Runs like a dream!

The mustang has the 4.0? I thought the sixxers were a 3.7L. I admit I don't know much about the mustang sixxers.

i have seen several cars tick at idle when cold with a FRAM.
I would have preferred motorcraft filters, but AutoZone doesn't sell them, and my local Walmart was out of the fl820s. I wasn't aware I could return the filters at a different AutoZone than where I bought them. If that's the case, I'll exchange them at the first one that had no oil as they at least had the Bosch filters. Weird how one filter brands ADBV works fine on one engine, and doesn't on another though.
they can not automatically void the claim its against federal law especially in P.A. home to the largest Lemon Law Firm in America... I do know that these engines have issues we see them here in the shop from time to time

I don't think all Frams have silicone ADBVs. I found that the FL400 Motorcraft in my Taurus helped with the dry start sound, but I've used the Fram Toughgard with the silicone ADBV and it did as well as the FL400s Motorcraft. They both had the silicone material in the ADBV. Ford had the FL400 but the S stands for the silicone valve.
So it might depend on the material of the ADBV......
