Hey all, just joined because of my interest in oil and getting the best for my vehicles!

I have a 2005 F250 with the 6.8l 3v v10, I'm currently running 5w-20 Castrol GTX. before this I ran Mobil Super 5000. I'd like to stay around 5000 mile OCI, but I'm seeing consumption at about 1 quart-1000 miles. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I've checked the PCV system and its maintained. I get a little blue smoke during morning starts. Truck has just over 155k on it. what oil would you recommend? I stay away from Synthetics normally. Thanks in advance!

The smoke during starts is from oil that has leaked through the valve seals. For that large of an engine, with that many miles, I would continue on as usual and not worry about it. You could reduce consumption a little bit by using one of the oils specifically designed for older cars. That oil is slightly less volatile and wouldn't be consumed as quickly.

I have heard that the V10's consume oil, believe due to ring clearances.

I understand your reluctance to use synthetics but I would try a cycle of Mobil 1 High Mileage to help clean things up a bit then go to Motorcraft 5W20 (a Semi Syn)further help with the cleaning and just excellent oil IMO

The oil on start could be from two things:

1. Normal culprit is valve stem seals for this condition, as outlined by redbone3.

2. On earlier Modular engines, I know the PCV piping was revised because it was known to cause oil consumption through the PCV. You could call your Ford dealer and find out if this is the case for your vehicle. Oil vapour drawn through the PCV and pooling can also cause the blue "plume" on start.

Since #2 is a LOT less expensive than #1, I would start with a call to your Ford dealer.

Overkill-i have done that, thank you for the suggestion though! I have thoroughly cleaned all PCV piping about 2500 miles ago along with replacing the PCV valve.

Cmorr-i think I'll have to give that a try. I heard the same thing about v10s also.

Thanks for the suggestions fellas/ladies!

It isn't that the piping gets dirty, there was literally a redesigned pipe of a slightly different shape because the OE one caused consumption on some engines. I don't know if that's the case for your V10, but the TSB applied to my '02 5.4L FWIW

Ya there was no TSB for mine, the service manager also told me they updated a lot of the PCV equipment on the 3v 5.4s and 6.8s because of the issues

I'm thinking its valve stem seals, a high mileage oil might help, or moving to 5W30. I would check the PCV system first, and if that doesn't solve the problem check the valve seals and replace them if needed.

Awww, that sucks

Valve stem seals aren't normally an issue on the later Modular engines. Have you priced out the job?

i would keep using the mobil super 5000 and just keep the oil level up. the 5w20 is fine as well. i own a 99 v10 truck and it runs good on mobil super 5w20 i ran 5w30 in it before the 5w20 and it actually used more oil on 5w30 than 5w20. we own several modular ford company trucks and this has been the case with many of them. the ones we switched from 5w30 to 5w20 use less oil on the 20wt. many here will recommend 5w30 5w40 and even thicker, there is no reason at all for that. unless you plan to replace the valve seals i would just run the very economical mobil super and carry a extra couple of quarts around with you.

Overkill- I've seen other vehicles with bad valve stem seals, and this doesn't remind of that. Its only every now and then that I get the blue puff. On another site, other V10ers say they get blue puffs after a day of short trips, which I do more than I'd like. Sounds to me like the consumption is normal.

Donnyj-i planned to stick with 5w-20, I never go above the manufacturer spec with weight and viscosity.

Blue puffs are not normal. It will eventually contaminate the catalytic converter(s). It still sounds like a PCV issue IMO.

Howdy from a fellow FTEer!

I've got a 3V 5.4 and it also consumes some oil, although not quite as much as your V-10 does. With Motorcraft 5W-20, it used about 1 quart/2000 miles. I switched to Amsoil and it was the same. Then I put in Mobil Super High Mileage and my consumption went down to only one quart over my 5000 miles OCI. Now I'm trying Valvoline Maxlife. It definitely runs more quietly on the Maxlife than the other oils I've used, and 1000 miles in I can't see any noticeable consumption. I'll see what happens over 5000 miles.

If you like Mobil, I'd give the Super HM a try. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with Maxlife either. Of course, if you do have a PCV problem or some other mechanical issue, no oil is going to help it.

5-20 in a heavy duty truck engine. I don't care WHAT the thin oil types have to say... Try Rotella T6 5-40.

I'll check over the PCV system one more time. Although I have noticed since I junked the K&N filter I can't recall if ive seen blue smoke. I had a MAF issue a couple months ago (PO thought an SRL Performance "Chip" aka resistor was a great idea, messed the wiring up) I just changed this oil at 155k and its just about 600 miles into it and checking yesterday it was full. Maybe the K&N and rich condition was giving the smoke?

Can you tell me why to jump up to 5-40? Owners manual states 5-20, and its 20* here. The mod motors have some tiny oil passages, so I'm curious why ya say the jump. Thanks!

I have a mod motor in my mustang. I used to think engineers were clueless and just wanted my engine to dissolve using 5w-20. I was mistaken. I used 40 grades in my mustang and I had no Ill effects however I don't think I'll do it anymore.
Try going up a grade, maybe a 0w30 for winter and see if it helps.
I had no faith in 20 grades until my hemi. It's rolling past 250k now and not a single tick or funny sound, and will still rip the tires to smoking heaps.
Then my girls 03 windstar also has 230k on it,and still runs like a top.
I will defer to the engineers who built the engine, taking into account or climate and highway speeds.
