What would you do if you met the guy who dinged your door?

My friend gave an interesting way they protect cars in Bulgaria. People park on the sidewalk in the old narrow streets. People worry about side of car getting scratched up on the nice MB or BMW's if they own one. So what they pay someone with an absolute sh*tbox to double park and they get close to the edge of wall. Intersting concept to make money and avoid those blemishes.

I often wonder why, with all the millions of cars on the road, and everybody competing for parking space, why we make cars out of thin mild steel and paint them to a mirror Finnish, just so we can worry our guts out polishing it and (if I am led to belive DAN) threatening another persons life to protect???
Perhaps some egos are more frail than even our cars!

We make that choice everyday, yes a collection of metal plastic and rubber is worth anyone's life or we would have done something about the 50,000 lives that are lost on the higways ever year. We have made choice on cars over lives.

Dan

I sometimes think parking away from all the other cars simply invites trouble by calling attention to your car and the implication that you want to avoid damage to it.

Sort of like the cliche about waving a red flag in front of a Bull.

No, people choose their time or their to do list or their fun or their exhibition of superiority over others' lives.

Its the analog to guns... guns don't kill people, people kill people... cars don't kill people, people kill people.

ANd how do they do it? Driving too fast, driving inattentively, driving aggressively, driving closer to the limits of their vehicle's capabilities, driving under the influence, driving vehicles that are too large and unecessary for their needs, for the purpose of style...

If people followed the rules, just a few of them, like never using a cellphone in the car, never eating or drinking in the car, never driving if youve had even one drink within the last three hours, and keeping speed at

Speaking of the transgressions JHZR2 mentioned, today was a hwy trip day and I distinctly remember blowing my horn at a guy who was sitting in the left lane while: eating, writing AND talking on the cell phone....a tri-fecta. Plenty of cops on the road though....think they wrote a single ticket for anything except speeding?

I think there should be less safeguards of all kinds. Idiots are protected, consequently searching and finding each other and breeding, making the quality of life for all increasingly unbearable.

And the more public the idiocy, the faster it should get its deserved reward, so as to prevent that gene pool from continuing on.

If everyone owned guns, it wouldnt take long for the criminals to be culled either. "An armed society is a polite society" Robert A Heinlein.

lol, you musrthave been driving between Phila. and Delaware... that isall too common on the stupid 95 corridor.

I am all for it, but only if anyone, including little children, minorities, the disabled (including the blind) may also arm themselves with the same type weapon that anybody else may carry.

PS: In some of Heinlein's stories, like 'Red Planet,' young teens were carrying lethal firearms. Also, Heinlein was often very cynical.

I used to believe that, Dan, but quite frankly, when the talk turns to shooting somebody with a .45 for dinging the door of a thirty year old car, I am now considerably less sure.

In my state, kicking in four doors of someone's car for dinging your door IS a criminal act.

edit: I hope I am taking your posts too seriously, and that you really don't believe in shooting people for misdemeanors and culling undesirables. You like to quote authors. Have you read that lengthy book by William L. Shirer?

When you see the judgment some idiots use when driving a car, it worries me what they might do with a gun.
Sorry, it was not my intention to get this thread 'Off Topic' But really it IS all about 'how far do you go to avenge someone who dings your car'.

Conversely, what kind of world would it be if there were no fear of repercussions to any actions? How would life be like for all of us if we turned the other cheek every time some knuckle dragger decided it was ok to damage our property, or worse yet, our person? If the undesirable sector of the general public ever got the impression that there is NO price to be paid for any destructive or negligent act, we'd be much worse off than we are now. People put "Protected by Smith & Wesson" bumper stickers on their cars because fear is the only weapon we have to protect what is ours, whether they choose to door-ding it, vandalize it or steal it. If you think it's possible for a 6'8" man to step out of that Mercedes and mop the parking lot with your face, you might be more careful with the operation of your car door.

The last time I witnessed my truck being Dinged in a parking lot, was by (I guess) welfare mom with two kids, I didn't think the act was deliberate, but it was 'Don't give a Darn'
I was PO, and told her so, BUT, what are my options? Take her #, report it, go through my Insurance? (not worth it) Pursue and harass her, even assault her!! (we can all see where that would lead) Kick the doors in on her POS car (same as above if I'm spotted on Video, or worse if I encounter her Low-Life Biker Boyfriend)
Sometimes life Sucks! If you can afford to have a shinny or new car, living with stone chips on the Highway and parking lot dings is part of the cost of ownership. Stay off gravel roads and supermarket parking lots and you improve your chances, but nothing is forever! In REAL life Vengeance can be hard to find.
What if you show your .45 and the guy suggests you put it in your anatomical Holster! Really, I once knew a guy (very bitter) with a terminal illness that might do something like this.
Now every situation is different, is the offending driver a spotty teenager or a Merc driver with DOC1 as a licence plate? each would evoke a different response from me.

Just the other day, I was walking to my parked car and saw a guy and his GF looking at my rear bumper. It "looked" like they were inspecting for damages.

About 100 ft away, I unlock my car remotely - their heads peer up and they walk off.

I walk right past them and inspect my bumper. Luckily, I saw no damage. I remained silent because I didn't "see" him hit my car - it was only a suspicion. If I saw any damage, all **** woulda broke loose.

In retrospect, I shoulda asked if he hit my car regardless of any damages... I probably woulda yelled at him though...

Careless drivers annoy me - people who don't take responsibility ignite an uncontrollable rage.

If the gutless individual with the screw gun didn't have enough "intestinal fortitude" to confront the offender, then he simply became a gutless vandal.

Dan,

I have a very inteligent, educated(phd), well traveled, ORDAINED MINISTER, brotherin law. Some time back he felt endangered by a nearby motorist who approached his car in a beligerent manner. B.I.L. "showed him his pistol". Fellow got B.I.L.'s license#, called cops, and B.I.L. is now a fellon on parole with the possibilty of getting his full rights restored in a couple of years. The only time it's acceptable to clear leather is when your LIFE is in clear and imminent danger. When you do clear leather it had better be the last thing the source of danger ever SEES!

By the way, I carry a firearm in the vehicle at all times, quite often on my person. If you dent my car we may have words, maybe even an arshe whippin, but the pistol is for the guy who smashes in my window at a stop light and tries to drag me through the opening!

Bob

All this reminds me... I gotta order some body side moldings for the new car. Carrying a gun just because you can is not a good idea IMO. We're all human and an argument with the wrong person could escalate into a killing pretty quickly. After you pull yer piece and cap someone there's no turning back.

Clete,

See above reference to life in danger.

As passengers of 9/11 planes found out, no one can make that judgement call but the one threatened. (Not infering that airline passengers should be armed, but the next time it may well take more than box cutters for crowd control) Certainly believe that if pilots, navigators, can pass mental evals and be given responsibility for plane and passengers they whould certainly be REQUIRED to carry on the job.
