Its a 6 ft, 3 blade mower, made in Italy. Gear box has not been changed is some years and I forget what weight oil to use. I'm thinkig something like 80-90 but not sure.

I think that an internet search could be your best friend & best success for information.
Putting in more information for you specific mower & gearbox would be the key for finding your answer.
Unless some here has your specific equipment or a great level of knowledge of your unit(which you didn't mention), along with the owner's manual, you'll never know.

My old Bush hog leaked so much gear oil I just stuffed it full 00 grease.

Refer to your owner's manual, if you have one, to see what weight gear lube yours takes. I'm sure just about anything you could grab off the shelf is better than what's in it right now.

My Landpride 6ft mower is 80-90 gear oil. Pretty much any gear oil will work. I have Amsoil 75-90 in right now.

FYI - I replaced the factory fill gearbox oil on my Yanmar MF60 mower at ~66 hours with Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil. The mower is happy; no issues. Any quality GL-5 gear oil in the 75W-90 range should be alright.
