At our winery we have a Westfalia Separator, made in Germany. We have changed the gear oil in the unit before, but I don't think the "Pitt Penn" 80-90 is really a good choice.

Here are the specs from the manual on what it needs:

C-LP 114 (according to DIN 51502)
BTW they recommended "Serarator lubriciating oil C-LP 114" on the page.

VISCOSITY:
Meets the following: 114 +/- 8cSt at 50 deg C, (220 +/- 22 cSt at 40 deg C)

ADDITIVES:
a. Additives giving increased protection agasint corrosion and increased resistance to again, with properties preveing corrosion on steel according to DIN 51355/B

b. Additives for decreasing wear and increasing the load-carrying capacity. The "FZG" gear rig test according to DIN 51354 as well as the test according ot A/16,6/90, load grade > 12, must have passed.

c. Demulsifiying behavior according to DIN 51599 < 60 minutes.

These are strange paramaters. I tried to get some information from Amsoil tech support but they were not very helpful. I thought surely some of the Amsoil products might be in this league but now, I'm not sure.

I'm pretty sure that the local Pitt-Penn 80W-90 grease at the local hardware for cheap, cheap.. is not what we are needing.

Thanks!!

Where's Bruce and Mola when you need 'em?

Gear oils are spec'd at 100c. That 40*c temp of 220 to me means that this is an ISO-220 industrial lubricant. The other specs seem similar to GL5 gear oils so you'll probably need an ISO220 oil with a full EP/AW additive package.

The PittPenn might be a little thin. Mix the 80w90 and 85w140 50:50 until you source the correct fluid.
How big is the sump? What temp does it normally operate at? is there a pump and filter, or splash/soak lubrication?
When did you last change the gear oil and with what? Any problems?

Recontact Amsoil and ask for the full specs of their AGM ISO 220 EP industrial gear oil. Then, use your yellow pages and call the oil suppliers and see what they have for that ISO-220EP industrial manufacturing gear oils. There should be plenty choices in case, pail, or drum sizes

Industrial gears are speced at 40C what they want is a GL-4 Industrial 220 gear oil.
What major is in your area? ANY ISO 220 gear will
meet that spec like Shell oils Omala 220 Chevron used to be called? Nl gear oils, Anyway a "industrial" gear oil Iso VG 220.

Also a "typical" 80/90 will have a 40C vis of
around 220 cSt at 40C. So the Piit Peen other than to high a add pack (GL-5) is OK.

GAI aka Westfalia, contacted me by fax the other day. They recommended Shell Omala ISO VG 220. I have also found Shell Omala VG220 and it does list the specs needed. Amsoil contacted me with email and phone and send over pdf files about their Severe Gear CLP gear oil They have a gear oil that is synthetic, that meets the criteria. It is not listed in the brochure, but it is a viscosity grade 220 oil at 40 Cst. I haven't heard on prices yet from the Amsoil one. Westfalia was $101.00 for a 5 gallon pail. Kamp Oil of Grand Rapids stopped by and they have one made by Citgo that meets the CLP designation and they want $61.00 for it delivered. They also have a synthetic he believed for this.
