Not really. If it snows here the cars you find in the ditch are BMW and other RWD like toyota GT86 etc...
Here in Colorado the ditch vehicles are almost always all wheel drive.
Mostly transplants from warm weather states that think they cant slide off the road.
And they haven't leaned the meaning of black ice.

Yeah I can see AWD being a fast way to get you into trouble. No issues getting out of the last corner and arriving at the next way faster than you should.

2002 Lexus ES300. Driven many FWD vehicles since; Volkswagen Passat, Audi A6, Mercedes A-Class, Opel/Vauxhall Vectra, Ford Mondeo, Mini Cooper, Peugeot 508, Suzuki Swift, Mitsubishi Galant, Nissan Maxima, Chevrolet Impala, Buick Park Avenue, Ford Taurus...you name it. Personal preference has always been rear wheel drive.

Probably a late 1970s Celica. My best friend's parents had one and they let he and I drive it around out in the country on some back roads where they had some land. We were probably 12,13 or so at the time. And it was a standard too!!:D

That's very true. When I was in tec school I had a 84 dodge aries that went through snow with no problem. Drove it up to Ceasars Head passing 4x4 trucks that couldn't do it with just street tires on.
I've seen front wheel drive cars get through some decent snow on all season radials.. and real heavy snow covered roads with hills when equipped with good snows at all 4 corners. My scion ia had skinny all season tires if I recall 185's that car got through 6-8inches of snow no problem.

everything I've owned has been FWD... thinking to my childhood....mom & Dad's First FWD (that i recall, may have had some before my time) was the '85 Dodge Omni.
the most basic of base models that I've ever seen. it had power nothing. no A/C, Simca 1.6l Engine, and VW 4 speed manual. (some times cruising in 4th, the upshift light would flash on the dash....so what electronics there were thought it had a 5 speed...)
didn't even have a Radio from the factory, dad had a basic AM only unit installed.
only $5k new. ($12k in 2020 dollars)

My first experience was driving my sisters 1974 Saab Sonett III. It's a really tiny car that is made for people under six foot tall. I never once drove the car with out coming away with a bruised knee banging the underside of the dash board from depressing and releasing the clutch pedal. Weighing in just under 1900 pounds it came with a Ford V4 1.7 liter engine rated at between 65-75 bhp. depending on the source, a four speed, manual steering and a fiberglass body. Driving it was like riding in an over size Go-Cart no real power but it made up for that limitation with incredible handling. Probably due to the very low center of gravity and low weight. Even with the low power to weight ratio is was a really fun car to drive. When seated in the car it was like you were sitting on the ground, it was that low.
