I've read that people have opened multiple Amazon webpages for the same item with different prices which is crazy.
Flexible pricing has become common. I get ads even in different languages and the prices are apparently based on where an AI thinks I live, which is apparently a Central American country most of the time. 🤣

I got some real sticker shock the other day.

I need a head gasket for the MG, and in the past there were basically two mainstream options-the "standard" copper for about $5, and a really good quality composite gasket(with bunches of reinforcement, water passage seals, etc) for about $20. The latter was also available in a set that included most of the engine top end gaskets for $40, and I'd always buy the set because there were so many useful extra gaskets in it.

Now, the gasket available from the mainstream suppliers are around $15 for copper. There is a gasket available under the Payen name, which was the brand on the old "good" one, that is still about $20, but basically seems to be a steel gasket with a sort of waxy coating-basically junk. There's a composite available that's not as good as the old Payen for about $30.

One supplier I know of imports the old Payen ones, with all the good silicone rubber reinforcements and all the other goodies, and it's nearly $50 for just the gasket and over $70 for the set. That was some real sticker shock.

Would be interesting to know what year, model flavor that Flex is.
I keep getting brake parts from RA for years and didn't notice big price differences.

~15 years ago RA was WAY cheaper than B&M but shipping was obscene and killed the deal 2x over. But since, RA has worked deals -- primarily with FedEx-- and quite often shipping for a whole brake kit may only be ~$15-20 (varies of course by application and warehouse/destination)

I understand OP was already looking at RA and I don't know why he saw such an increase. It's worth noting RA also plays pricing games like Amazon and sometimes prices shoot up the next day if you look at something again. I've been able to verify by logging out and clearing cookies and prices are back to "yesterday"

Furthermore most brake kits are $150 through an O'Reilly commercial account. Usually mid-grade ceramic pads and their partially coated (hat and vanes) rotors (which I think are just standard now). I'm told AutoZone's commercial brake kit pricing can be even better.

Finally as mentioned by others I'm never above Amazon Warehouse Deals brake parts -- at least for my own vehicles. I don't use mismatched stuff on customers' vehicles unless it's charity then I figure beggars can't be choosers

15 years ago? :ROFLMAO:
Over past 10 years average annual inflation was 6.7%, calculate compound and it's about 100% over past 10 years. No wonder why prices doubled over that time frame.

I have been yelled at about pricing a lot more lately. Now instead of reasoning or trying to rationalize it I just say "yeah everything is expensive now. Will that be cash or card?" Not trying to sound mean, but especially the Super Duty owners that constantly knock off their $1,666 mirror or break both $1,400 taillights and then short out the $700 BLIS module inside due to moisture don't get much sympathy from me anymore. I didn't break it, I didn't build it, I didn't make up the price, I just look it up in the catalog am the bartender (psychiatric help 5c) for our shop.

Medical equipment repair industry here and it’s the same thing.

Don’t break it and you won’t have to pay big $$$ repair bill.

Some medical equipment parts are like a BMW or Benz dealership prices.

I am extremely helpful, just tired. A customer just went to complain about me to our GM because I require proof of ownership and matching photo ID, per Ford guidelines an CA state law, to look up a key code for a vehicle. He tried yelling at me about it and I told him "I am here to help you, I didn't lose your key. I am not the one you want to be mad at right now." Some people were just raised wrong.

Excellent response. Everybody requires proof to cut a key!

I am an absolute jerk about it too. The ID has to match the registration/title. If it is a business I want to see a business card with their name on it that matches. Its always fun when someone tries to come in and get a key for their spouse, but they are divorced they aren't on the registration. Or it is a commercial driver with an expired license.

Back on topic, more and more lately I gasp at the prices of some parts. There is a lift support shock for the newer Bronco soft top frame, M2DZ-78515A60-B, that is $1217.32 MSRP. It isn't something that looks overly special. Just fits a Bronco. I have sold a few of them actually. FWIW the whole softtop frame is like $12k. We have sold a few of them, one for a tree falling on the vehicle and another when the customer opened the top during super gusty winds and broke it.
