What the happened with auto part prices?

I got a pair of coated rotors for my camry for something silly like $37 total shipped earlier this year. They were on closeout and I was brand agnostic.

I feel for those who need something from a local parts chain today though, like the motoring public that pays for labor.

the ones that I used....and I "am" a fan of Centric coated because they look identical to Toyota OE, down to the x-hatching on the surfaces. One differnece though, is the hats are black, whereas OE is gray....

I paid $27 a pair, then $35 a pair for these exact Centrics (I installed the $27 and the $35 are in the basement), they are now $49.

But look at a motor mount for a Buick Enclave and for GM OE, I paid $85 in 2020, it went over $100, and now it's $80. OE brake rotors have also gone up, I snagged 2 fronts on amazon $49.34 Dec 2019, and today amazon hasn't got them, but rockauto $68.79

I guess it depends on the part. tires are very expensive imho now....

If it wasn't for Rock Auto, FCP Euro, etc. it would really suck. Take example the Jetta needed (well still does, gotta get my lazy butt out there) new spark plugs. Locally they want $19 a plug for the Bosch 8180. Got some off RA for a little under $8. Yes, I understand shipping, but I picked up a set of wipers and a lift strut for the trunk. All shipped to my door for about what 4 spark plugs would be locally.

Toyota dealer is also gouging as well. Charged me $13 for a YZZN1 filter and plug gasket.

I was looking at my email from July 2020 for a receipt for my centric rotors for ford flex. 56.81 dollars per rotor. Now same rotor sells for anywhere from 100 to 180 dollars?
I understand inflation but this seems way above average.
They really jumped between early 2022 and 2023. Inflation and limited availability I'm thinking. My dad and I were able to get rear drums, shoes, spring kit etc for about 85ish out the door for my neon. Fast forward a year and the same parts were 50 percent more. Unfortunately i had to fork out for a repair shop to fix everything as the e brake cable stuck and caused the rear brake shoes to drag ruining brand new hardware.

Can’t say what the price would have been 3-4 years ago, but I thought Wagner ecoat rotors and OEx pads for a 2014 Focus shipped to my house for $105 was pretty good… that was a few weeks ago.

It’s because of “Covid”. That’s the fit all response that I’m told is for the incredible price jump in services and goods. How long has it been since the pandemic was declared over? Instead of “Covid” I think the term “opportunistic greed” fits. Folks, that’s here to stay.
