I have a 06 Honda Civic LX with 5-speed ATX

Owners manual is anal about only using Honda fluid and emergency use Dexron III, then flush....

What are other Honda owners using in their ATX's?? I am looking for a synthetic like M1 or Redline or AMSOIL.

I use the Honda fluid in our 99 Civic, no problems with 110k miles so far. I drain and refill every third or fourth oil change.

If you buy it by the case you can get it for $5 a quart, just ask them they'll do it.

I use the Amsoil Universal fluid in my 06 Tacoma, seems to work well, but I'm not sure how to tell the difference.

Why don't you write to Honda and ask for the confirmation of the approval? If you get it then that's good.

Honda fluids is what the fool mentioned on the phone, I find that kinda of strange that they have a monopoly.

Great about Amsoil, any other synthetic products??

It's not at all strange to me. They (Honda) have validated a product for their application and that is what they recommend. Other companies might claim that their fluids 'meet the requirements' but with no proof and no approval in my view such claims have no value.

aldead I appoligize I was under the impression that Amsoil was approved by Honda, it is not. I own a 2007 Honda Fit and under the manufacturers warranty and use only Z-1. Amsoil is approved by Amsoil for use in a Honda.

That's the problem with most of these so called 'approvals'.

Onion's own jug of crusty used motor oil is approved by Onion for use in a Honda. And I'll sell it to ya' cheaper than Amsoil. Or Honda.

With full warranty if you can PROVE (in a court of law) that Onion's Crusty Used Motor Oil caused the transmission failure. It's never been proven thusfar.

Full marks!

If you want a sythetic alternative to Honda Z-1 then Amsoil or Redline D4 are both great fluids. And if you are "parnoid" about the approval nonsense then just stay with Z-1.

Thanks everyone for their input, warranty will be up in about 4k miles, then Redline D4

I use Honda fluid only in my CRV, I have read in forums of people that have used other than Honda fluid in their AT with poor results. When you start using Redline, please let us all know how it turns out.

Yeah, every car I`ve ever owned has said to exclusively use their fluids. My 300ZX manual says,'Use genuine Nissan fluids",my 3000GT`s manual said, "Use Genuine Mitsubishi fluids",and so on.

Z-1 is more friction modified to control shifting, that is why Dexron type fluids don't feel right in Hondas.

Back in 2000-2001, Quaker State made a licensed Z-1 only fluid, but then they quit making it.

Anyway, flush the Z-1 and fill with a synthetic universal multi-vehicle, Z-1 is extremely weak stuff. I have seen it last 30,000 in Civics and Accords without too much stink, but in a CRV or Oddessy, the fluid is putrid at 25,000 miles.
