what oils do YOUR cars like?

used oil analysis have shown that the Grand Cherokee's flat tappet 4.0 does NOT like M1, producing more than twice the iron than any other oil tested.

Valvoline conventional, Super Tech Syn, and Amsoil have all shown very good used oil analysis.

The Wrangler likes all the oils tested, including the M1.

Why do you think the Quaker State Conventional is better for noise control? You you say because of more Boron? I heard lots of people say Pennzoil Conventional is the best for that, but not to many about Quaker State Conventional


I don't want to make a blanket statement, for the application I've used it in recently I noticed a marked difference with Quaker State Conventional.

I actually had Pennzoil Conventional in the engine of the Sportage for one OCI and at least for my Sportage engine it seemed noiser than when I had Quaker State Conventional in there.

My vehicles don't care as long as I'm not running something absurd. I've had oils I didn't like in certain vehicles, such as anything that would leak too rapidly in the F-150 or burn off too quickly in the Audi, but the vehicles never said a word. Other than that, I doubt I could tell the difference between Mobil 1 Extended Performance and Supertech, unless one were 0w-20 and the other 20w-50 or something strange.

When I had my '02 Grand Prix GTP I really couldn't tell a difference between oils used in it. Then I started reading here, realized I could just follow the MM in the car and use a conventional. After I moved at a certain point the local OC place with a good reputation used QS products so I used Quaker State Ultimate Durability since I had the S/C'd engine. But before that under my ownership it had whatever was cheap at an OC place and it never complained. Owning the Kia is the first vehicle where I note a difference in engine noise.

This sort of thing probably seems to vary pretty widely.

Absolutely. The old F-150 was a bit noisy, too, when the oil thinned out from fuel. So, fresh oil or a thicker oil made a difference. Some engines you notice things, some you don't.

When I was younger, dad used Castrol GTX in everything, so I never knew what made a difference. Later we used different things on different cars:
1995 Honda Accord and Valvoline Maxlife
1997 Lexus ES300 and Mobil 1 5w30
2003 Saturn ION made no difference
2007 Pontiac G6 and Valvoline Synpower 5w30

And on my Mitsubishi, I have not explored much. The first oil change was with Black Castrol EDGE 10w30, there were some oil changes with Gold Castrol EDGE 10w30, and now I am using the Titanium Castrol EDGE because that replaced Gold Castrol EDGE. I haven't felt any difference.

One of my cars even cares. My 2000 Concorde 2.7 trips a hot idle oil light with Castrol EDGE 5w30 and Schaeffer 700 10w30. Never with GC or Mobil 1 0W40.

My Ski Nautique 351W likes HDEO 15W40.

My 2012 Chevy Equinox seems to like Pennzoil Plat. or Quaker Stake ultimate durability...used oil analysis show that Mobil 1 always leads to higher iron counts, not sure why...
