What oil viscosity for this scenario?

Hi folks,

First post here so I hope I'm not asking a ridiculous newbie question. Have been a lurking a bit and learning, but I still have questions.

I have a 2001 Audi A6 with approx 80k miles. The vehicle rarely sees more than 20 mile round trips. Most of the commutes are around 5 miles each way, only exceeding 40mph 5% of the time. I don't want to overstate the point. We're not NYC where taxis start and stop every few blocks. There's not as many stop signs/stop lights.

Here's the twist -- I live in the Caribbean where the temperature gets as low as 70 in the winter, and peaks somewhere North of 95 degrees in summer.

Choices for oil are slim, as you can imagine, but we do have a Napa. They don't stock a complete stateside inventory, but we're happy to get what we can. That means there is limited inventory of M1, Syntec, and the Napa Synthetic.

Now, my question is this: Based on the driving pattern and climate, would you use a different viscosity than the Audi recommendation of 5w30? Should I go with a 10w40 instead?

Much thanks!

I would either use 10w-30 natural oil or 5w-30 or 0w-30 synthetic(or even 10w-30 synthetic) any of the major brands should be fine. Mobil 1, valvoline, are my favorite, but I would bet the napa stuff is good too, might even be made by valvoline!

German engines in general 'usually' require a heavier oil, something A3 rated. I might be wrong on this, I've never owned a German car. I know you're selection is limited, but since you can get Syntec, you might want to use the 0W-30 'GC' (make sure it says 'made in Germany' on the back), or 5W-40, if they have it. If they don't, they probably have 5W-50, which might be a good choice.

If you are looking for a cheaper oil, you could probably use any 15W-40 dual-rated fleet oil, whatever you have available. I'm sure someone more knowledgable will chime in, AND there is also a 'European/Import Oil' forum here, they might have recs. for an A6. Have a look there.

I'd use M1 10w40 High Mileage if I could get it. Otherwise, the synthetic options driven by price and availability. The GC would also be a good option.

The Syntec isn't of the German variety, unfortunately. There are a few options for the Mobil 1, but we're talking $10.50 or so per quart. Syntec is $8 and change. I guess that's part of the price you pay for paradise. I'd buy online, but shipping usually brings total costs to par with what's available here.

5W-40 for Audi's. I'd consider that a good guess and not an expert recommendation.
