We just added a 2005 Honda Element to our rolling fleet. The car has 123,000 miles and, according to the previous owner, it has had a steady diet of Honda dealership dino (Pennzoil) oil. I want to get everyone's two cents as to what oil I should use in it. I sent a PM to Johnny, as he has two Elements, and asked him if Pennzoil Platinum would be a good oil to use...he confirmed it as a solid choice(thank you for your quick reply Johnny!). So, what is everyone else's thoughts? Should I use the Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 at this mileage level?

Is 5w20 the recommended grade? If so, go with it- no need to thicken up at only 123k miles, unless that engine is made of bubblegum (and likely its not- Honda can't build an automatic transmission to save their life, but they build a superb engine). Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra would be fine. My personal pick would be Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20, or Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 if you want to go thicker.

+1 on that Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 and usually can find it at walmart. It is a good oil. I come form a long line of old school "thicken up the oil after x miles" family members. When I get out of my warranties I thicken up, you can use 5w30 if you want. Its up to you

Like I said in our PM, over 100K on the 05, no leaks and no consumption on 5W-20, and I believe the transmissions in the Elements is a different unit than is in the cars. I have not had one hint of transmission trouble in either of my Elements.

I hope they've got it together. A co-worker just had a bout of transmission trouble on his Pilot, but its a couple of years old.

I thought Honda dealerships use bulk Mobil oil...

Under that logic, running Mobil 1 synthetic would be good since Honda's OEM oil supplier is ExxonMobil. As for the viscosity rating, I can't really say.

Yes, I know my logic is heavily flawed, don't rag on me for that.

Usually dealers use what ever they can get the best deal on. There was an articles posted here somewhere that stated ConocoPhillips just got the contract for all of the packaged and dealer business at American Honda.
