I picked up a Honda em5000 generator from Craigslist for$30. Its the same as the picture below except the frame on this one is all rusted and extremely beat up aka it looks like a tree fell on it. Anyway I bought it because the engine turned over and the engine and generator portion all look surprisingly good. I'll have to basically rebuild the frame the generator sits in but that's ok. For now I just need to see if the generator runs and generates power. I don't have any manuals or any other info on what oil to use. What should I use? I have a ton of shell rotella 10w30 semi synthetic I bought on clearance from AutoZone a while back. Is that ok. Should I run a 40wt?. Should I use a single grade oil ie sae30 or is multi grade ok? Picture below is not my generator. Pretend this one went through mad Max and there you have it.

Yep. 10w30 is perfect for small engines. I think thats what most newer Hondas call for actually. I only use ND SAE 30 (Valvoline SB rated) in a couple worn out engines that smoke on the cheap Orschelens brand 10w30 synblend diesel oil i buy for 12 bucks a gallon. So yeah. Try the Shell synblend and if it smokes use Conventional or SB rated SAE30.

Cool thanks. I bought 40 gallons of the Shell oil when it went on sale so one more item I can use it in is great.

Yes, Sir!!

IMO 10w30 diesel oil should work for general use. If you're running a long and/or severe duty cycle in hot weather like some in hurricane country, try a 40 or 50 full synthetic.

+1 for the Rotella 10w30, that is what I run in my Coleman 4000 green machine with a Briggs flathead.

The 40 weight would also be fine, but might be a bit harder to start in colder weather.

Thanks. I'll run shell 10w30 for now may switch it up in the future.
