This question is for my brother. He recently purchased an '05 E500 with 20K mi. He's done some research, and was asking me about oil. I've already searched on here, and found one UOA -- using M1 @ 10k mi. It didn't look that well. He stated it has an oil life monitor. The dealer changed the oil, and told him to drive 12k miles (scary). It appears that most are running 0w40. He will probably drives less than 10K mi/yr: spirited driving mixture of 50/50 city/highway. He lives in NE -- gets hot and cold. I think it has a cartidge filter. It doesn't have a dipstick. He didn't think it even had a drain plug (because most suction it out the top). After additional searching, it does have a drain plug -- covered by a bunch of shields. He plans to use the plug.
Here's what I recommended: "if you are changing based off the oil life monitor, I would run Amsoil oil & filter for a max of 1 year". Does that sound reasonable? I'm a casual member here -- and don't know the details of used oil analysis, but some stated M1 didn't look good in this application after 10K miles.
