What oil for 96 Z28?

1996 6-speed Camaro z28 (5.7L V8) with about 4,000 on rebuild. 110,000 total miles. Has some bolts on and will have headers soon.

Had been using Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic before having to rebuild it. Have been using Castrol GTX during break-in.

Done with rebuild and break-in and want some opinions on oil to pick.

The weather here (NW Arkansas) does not get below 0 degrees ever really, so I was thinking about moving up to 10w30 (car manual says either 5w or 10w are ok, and to have the API starburst or whatever)

It's my daily driver and I atke it moderately eay most of the time, but I like to get on it every once in a while.

Have a 25 mile commute twice a day during the week on the interstate, and city driving on the weekends. Have been putting about 1,000 miles a month on the car, but that will probably be cut in about half after December, when I won't have to commute any more.

Also, car has a slow oil leak that I havent ben able to find the source of yet. That's all the info I can think of right now. I'd like to get a decent mileage with whatever I use also.

One of my friends mentioned Rotella. I hadnt even heard of it before today. What's the mileage like for it?

Nice car man. I had a 86 IROC-Z and later a 89 GTA. Both were so fun to drive. I wish I had the 350's but alas, mine were 305's. A friend of mine completely rebuilt the GTA though and kind of went wild. His dad had a mechanic shop and restored very old classics, so he had every part in the world. I don't remember for sure, but I think he said he put a 283 crank in it, bored it out with slightly higher compression pistons. The cam we had to order as we couldn't go to big and we had to get a cam that was listed with the chip we bought so the ECU would run it all correctly. The rear had 3:73's and the transmission was low gear'd too, so it was incredibly quick, but anything at speed wasn't a good race to mess with. Out of the hole the car never was beat even once. It set a 60ft record one night at the drags for bracket racing. The car would run extremley consistent 13.9's.

I so loved the sound too. Header's with 3.5" dual balanced exhaust with flowmaster's. Coming through the burnout chute would make the meanest most evil deep menacing growling sound I have ever heard. It was pure sound orgasm. The first time we ran it we got a standing ovation of cheers coming through the chute as the burnout ran through all 4 gears in a matter of seconds. Coming back around a small party rushed my car asking about it. lol. Man I love those old days.

Granted the car wasn't fast, but was so quick, sounded soooo good and was an absolute joy to drive. Hanging the rear out at will on demand and driving the car with the throttle was one of the greatest pleasures a car has ever given.

I've got 3:73's also, makes a world of difference. Might go with a cutout for the exhaust whenever I get the headers installed too
