I still use 0w20 on my daughters 2012 Camry. I have used Valvoline Restore and Protect since it came out. If you'd like a little thicker, 5w20 would be ok, but recommended would be 0w20.

I change hers every 4k. Those Toyotas do burn a little oil, in 4k I usually have to add about half a quart. So make sure he is checking the oil.

I still run 0W20 M1 EP and change it every 5K miles. However, it burns some oil b/w 1/2 to 1 qt for 5K miles. It was burning more wit M1 0W20 AFE. The car has over 160K miles and I bought it when it had 85K.
I've tried once M1 5W30, but it doesn't feel right in the winter. The cam chain (at initial start) and the entire engine sounded louder until the engine is well warmed up, which in the winter in Chicago takes significant time. I may try 0W20 ESP or some HM oil this winter and probably M1 5W30 EP next summer.

They do not, its burning oil from previous neglect. Generally attributed to 10k OCI suggested by Toyota...driving habits and the quality of oil is relevant for a 10k OCI.

the oil control rings have a little bit of carbon build up (hopefully there isn't any scoring of the cylinder walls, if so, at one point it will only continue to burn more oil)

5W is good down to -22º F (wind chill isn't a real temperature) so either that engine doesn't like Mobil1 or you were imagining it. When I say it didn't like it, I've absolutely heard differences with the same engine when using different oils.

I would go with a full synthetic high mileage.

Mobil 1 High Mileage is affordable enough at Walmart.

If there is any oil burning issues or signs of a lot of sludge you might want to consider Valvoline Restore & Protect.

That could be true. It was my in laws vehicle before my daughter got it from them. FIL went by the Toyota recommendation which was probably 10k. I say they are known to burn a little as I have heard that from others as well. I have always went 4k for synthetic. Who knows, but I still recommend checking it pretty often as with any vehicle.

M1 0w20 HM EP. Maybe something like VRP if it's got consumption but I really like the HM EP stuff for cars like that where I know the car isn't too hard on oil but it's probably got some leaks and the owner is likely going to push it way past 5k/6 months.
