What oil filters should I get?

I would try eBay for Fram Ultra six packs for the Prius, and Rock Auto for the German made filters, and hope that you don't end up with 10 year old stock.

For the Prius, any of the cheap Wixes will do 5k with no problems. Napa Silver, Proselect, Walmart Super Tech, Microgard, Parts Master, Pro-Tec, etc.

For the VW, Mobil 1 at AAP/Carquest. It's a 15k filter and it's included whenever AAP/CQ runs the Mobil 1 oil change special. Other than Fram, the name-brand filters for this engine are all the same German filter reboxed. Wix, Purolator, Mahle, Mann, Bosch, Hengst, Hastings/Baldiwn, so just shop on price.

Fram-made filters for that VW turbo are made in-house. They pay the patent holder to make it with their own media. The good news is that there is a Fram Ultra for that application; the bad news is that it can cost $30! But if you can get an XG10600 at a good price, buy it! Mobil 1 is also made by Fram, and usually expensive other than when it's on sale at AAP. There's also the OCOD for about $10. And of course, there are some cheap Chinese/Mexican knockoffs (design around the patent)

The only filters for your application with a silicone ADBV are the Mobil 1 and FU/XG.

Thanks slacktide

I just ordered 6 Fram Ultras for my Silverado. The copyright on the boxs were 2013. I didn't check the code on the filters. Motorking mentioned that Fram considers the upper limit of filter storage to be 7 years. He said the Ultra's fare better and could potentially go longer.

Copyright date on the box only indicates when the box was last designed. Date code on the filter could be years newer than the box copyright date.

When it comes to Toyotas, nothing does it better than OEM filters. I've seen a pretty thorough comparison between OEM Toyota Denso filters versus Fram, Purolator, Wix, etc and the results were eye opening. I now use nothing but OEM filters on my Tacoma now and it will stay that way. Used to be a big time Puro/Wix guy but not anymore. Puro is a good one to stay away from with all the tearing issues going on.

What was so "eye opening" about the Toyota OEM filters? Certainly it wasn't their filtering efficiency.

I have an 07 and suggest the Toyota filter in the Corolla longer size, sounds like it fits what you are asking in that price range. I cut open the Wix made ST4386 and wasn't impressed, not at all.

For the Beetle OE may also be Hengst.

I would use an OE or OEM filter on it with approved oil.

For the Prius as long as it is not Purolator made at 5000 mile changes it won't much care, I'd personally run a Fram Ultra (or M1 since you have coupons and gift cards) for 2 changes.

That's an idea. Is a high end filter better on the second oil change than a cheaper new one? How does Wix XP compare to M1 or Fram Ultra? Is a K&N Gold (white w/ nut on top) good enough to run twice? I think I still have one of those on the shelf...

Thanks, Doug

WIX XP has much worse filtering efficiency than those other two.

I know Toyota specifies conventional oil at 5000 mile intervals for the gen 2 Prius.

Even conventional oil can go longer and a good synthetic much longer, but I understand not wanting to deviate from the factory methodology and conventional at 5000 miles is probably close to a wash with synthetic at 10,000 if you're doing it yourself.

IMO the Ultra is the best choice as it is full synthetic media with a wire backing. Fram rates it for 15,000 (and Jay has said they are looking at increasing this. Several of us have run them in excess of 15,000. M1 is a good filter too but is usually more money than an Ultra. I don't know much about the Wix or K&N except that K&N recently moved off shore.

The Toyota service (Thailand made Denso) filter is a endcap-less design with a nitrile ADBV. It is likely that anything you run that doesn't tear will be at least as efficient. It is a nicely made filter.

Running an Ultra or M1 for two changes is still a very conservative scheme.

Stick with the Mahle and German Mann filters from Amazon for the VW.

Fram has had some problems with their cartridge filter designs for some European applications.

You could use almost anything on the Prius. Like you, a Microgard from O'Reilly's would be my first choice. Certainly using your gift cards would be a good idea. Not much reason to spend a lot of money on a high end filter for this vehicle.

The OP's VW doesn't use a cartridge filter. It's a spin-on can with a protruding thing at the end

The advice still stands, however:

Amazon's prices are usually high(er). AutohausAZ typically has the best prices. Don't be afraid of just picking up a first at the dealer, either! The OEM filters aren't expensive and there is something to be said for being able to go buy a quality filter in person exactly when you need it.
