I know this topic has been gone over before on this forum more than a few times, and after lurking here for quite some time and "doing my research", my head is now spinning from all the different routes to go. I'm still looking to settle on a solid oil/filter combo for a Camry I just picked up today. I know... the 5SFE is prone to sludge if not properly cared for.

The car: 2000 Toyota Camry, 94,000 miles, 4cyl. I looked into the oil fill reservoir (I know, not a good way to determine sludge presence) and it looked fine to me. No burnt oil smell, minimal signs of varnish. I plan to replace the PCV right off. The seller lives a block away from me, and he bought the car new from dealer 1/4 mile away. The seller said that he always had the oil changed there (good, bad, hmmm...?) and at regular intervals. As the oil sits in the car right now it looks pretty good. I plan to change it immediately, though.

My thoughts: Mobil Clean 5000 with Auto RX, new PCV, just to be safe. I'll be taking the valve cover off... and snap some pictures. The filter on there now is of course Toyota OEM. Should I do a UOA on the oil that's in there now?

My driving (in Minneapolis, MN) is about 160mi commute on inner city highways during off hours, so it's pretty free-flowing for the most part, 4 days a week. On the weekends I'm mostly doing errands around town, with the occasional highway trip to get away. My driving style is fairly mellow, with the occasional "italian tune-up" for good measure.

I would like this car to last me a good solid 4-5 years, so I would like to get her started on a steady diet of a good, quality oil that would address/neutralize the possibility of sludge while also considering the economics of 4-6000mi OCI, max. Any thoughts (oh, I know you guys here are chock full!) on a few oil options that will lubricate and also clean my little 5SFE fuel sipper? I'm also looking for oversize filter options, if anyone know off-hand...

Thanks guys

PYB and purolator filter 14476 the PYB will do some cleaning and should be able to handle the 4-6k OCI and i have had great results with purolator products at a great valve

No need to use ARX if the car was maintenance at dealer regularly and don't do UOA on the current oil in the car.

New PCV and PCV hose is a good idea along with new oil and Pure 1 oil filter for 2-3k miles, the do regular OCI of 5-6k miles with Mobil 5000 or PYB or any brand name dino with Pure 1 filter. You may also looking at changing other fluids such as brake, coolant, transmission, power steering ...

You may want to do UOA on second oil change, not the first oil change.

Sorry... I said:

What I meant to say is:

My commute is 40mi/day, total. I commute 4 days a week (total of 160).

Sorry for any confusion.

Begging your pardon, but that was a 16 mile commute, correct? 160 would be a bit much. Was that one way? An annual mileage figure?

I think any 5w-30 would work well for you. I don't see a need for a synthetic unless you wanted something in a 0w flavor. I guess it would work for the winter season. I think the FL400S/51516 would fit. It's just longer than yours or the one spec'd for the V6.

Thanks for the input Gary. Sorry I wasn't clear with my commute info. My daily commute is 40 miles roundtrip per day, 4 days/week. With weekend jaunts I'd figure my yearly average to be about 14k, give or take.

Just a little bit of luck and regular oil changes. I feel like we help each other out (my celica and i) I change its oil to help its life and mine as well its good maintenance and stress free time.

Then a 6month OCI looks to be where you're going to end up. That shouldn't be out of bounds. It's especially convenient where the temps are so polarized. That's if you're a DIY'r.

I drive an 07 Camry Hybrid, and I normally use the filter from Toyota. I usually print out a coupon, or use the one they mail home, to buy a Toyota filter for $3.50 plus tax. The coupon is good for any Toyota filter, and so I would think it would work for your car as well. Look for a Toyota dealer dealer near you and see if they have a similar deal.

As for the oil, I don't have any recommendation, other than to change the oil at 3k for one or two times before you do longer intervals because you just don't know how that engine is operating.

Sorry I know this is kind of an old thread, but I used the search function =)

Anyways, in regards to this comment, Gary Allan, are you saying the filters for the V-6 version will fit on this engine?? Im not specifically referring to purolator's either, as I use the Fram XG, but im not too happy with how short the normal filter is for the 5s-fe. So basically, if I want oversize, take the V-6 filter?? Oh and mine is a '93 but still has the 5S-FE engine, incase it makes a difference.

Oh and sorry to kind of thread steal here

Thanks
-Joseph

Heres my routine with every new "used" vehicle I buy. A 2500-3000 initial OCI with a quart of Marvels, and any name brand dino thats on sale. Fresh filter too. Prefer a purolator.
After that, I run a decent syn or syn blend. Motorcraft 5w-- has always been a good solid choice. Valvoline Durablend, Castrol, etc... I like to try different oils. I always change the filter every OCI too. And I place rare earth magnets on the filter too. Thats just me.

I've used an M1-301 on a 2000 Camry 5S-FE before. The Motorcraft equivalent is FL-1A. It's huge but it fits and works great.
