Good Morning BITOGERS. Was thinking about this last night at sprint car races. Since 358’s and 410’s run methanol I’m betting those folks ar using a straight weight oil; grade I don’t know.

Thank You

I spend most Saturday nights at the dirt tracks around my area. What I thought was going to be the biggest redneck thing I've ever done turned out to be one of the most fun things I've done. I enjoy the 602 and 604 cars the most but anytime you get 20 cars of any variety on a 3/8 mile dirt track it's going to get entertaining.

I walk the pits and see that keeping rear axles in these cars is quite a task. Unfortunately I don't see any sort of exotic lubricants. Stuff sold at Summit Racing (local for us) and the obligatory Lucas oil bottles seem the norm.

Gates open in 8 hours... let's git 'er done!

PS: fried bologna sandwiches at the concession stand are a top culinary choice. :)

I have a cousin with a good friend that runs a winged Sprint car regionally at places like Owosso and similar tracks. He told me the guy uses Mobil 1 in a 15W50 which is the same thing my cousin runs in his Outlaw super late model.

Adam… back in February I posted some pics from Cole Macedo’s shop in California. Not sure if this is the kind of sprint cars you’re referencing, but here’s a pic of their shop and what kind of oil they use. Enjoy!View attachment 229521
Crud. Realized it’s hard on a cell to get this image to zoom in far enough to read the cases. It’s HPL BAR 10w50. 😉

35 year veteran sprint car driver here. 20 years ago (more or less) I had been using Castrol GTX 20w-50..had an oil sponsor that gave us a drum a season and had been for 10+ years. No issues. When the oil companies were forced to change the oils (less ZDDP etc) I started to notice extreme wear on the cam lobes (solid roller cam with 230 lb seat pressure) At that point I researched the issues with "current" oils and decided to make the switch to Amsoil Dominator 15w-50. It is designed for use with methanol and really "fits" what we are doing with these engines. I would run the oil 2 weeks with a filter change (Baldwin B279) after every night. That following off-season when pulling the engine down the wear was GONE. I was able to run that cam 3 seasons with that oil.
Most teams will have their favorite..EG: Gibbs, Brad Penn, Schaffer's, etc. and they are all probably getting the job done but after me personally witnessing my engine internals I am a believer!

David Gravel WoO championship 2024, Carson Macedo second, Justin Sanders 2024 NARC Champion, Ayrton Gennetten 2023 and 2024 Powri champion, Logan Seavy USAC Champion (actually he scored a USAC triple crown).

There are many good oils out there. We are proud of our champions.

Other than our 5w40, 10w50, and 20w50. You will find Zmax (Amalie) Driven, champion, Mobil 1 Schaeffer, Brad Penn. Usually 20w50. There is no sound reason to use a straight weight oil in a sprint car. When you qualify you go from getting pushed to 8500 rpm’s in a few seconds on luke warm oil at best.
