What oil are vq37 owners using?

I wanna keep my fuel economy so I'm sticking to 5w30. I got a 2017 qx50/ex37/370 gt whatever you call the j50 in your region. I daily it take it on the toll roads to work where people are doing 50 over lol. Got about 120k km on it.

So I'm gonna try and diy an oil change for the first time lol (wish me luck, thinking extractor ?)

Been doing prepaid oil changes at the dealer, heard instead of Nissan ester oil they use mobil1 bulk oil. Heard people have better stuff.

Our first gen highlander I've been getting another shop to do mobil1 high mileage but I'll probably try valvoline restore and protect since that things burning oil. I've got extra hugs it those in the garage as options or I can get stuff at the store up here in Canada

So I'm curious what do most vq owners here use? I'm probably sticking to the Infiniti/Nissan filters

Yes, those 0.5% will really make a dent.

Not an Infinity/Nissan owner but so many of v6 Infinity/Nissan owners here use everything from 20 to 40 without issue.

If I was up in Canada i'd be interested in using this to keep costs down while still using a great oil and change frequently at 5k miles or less. Shell made motomaster 5w-40 is better than supertech but is $36 and the better motomaster oe plus 0/5w-30 and 0w-40 is a little more at $40 but still not much in the grand scheme of things. Far cheaper than paying the stealer to do it and no Nissan/Infinity don't use ester in their OEM oil. The supertech 5w-40 is most likely better blended than what it has now. Maybe the OEM oil used in the Nissan GTR had esters but it's not much anyway. Mobil triple action has some ester too. Mpg difference is nothing.

I've used the Supertech 5w40 Euro for most of the last 100,000km in my 2005 Honda CR-V. No issues at all - usually 8,00km OCI. $28CAD at Walmart - cheapest stuff you can buy. I recently adjusted the valves and found the internals to be spotless. Here's my thread on that

Yea I found it funny how their manuals suggest it but their own dealers don't use it lol

I keep hearing the vq runs really got so I gotta be picky about oils. Motomaster by shell is news to me heard alot of Americans run shell rotella?

The Nissan VQ40 engine absolutely loves Mobil 1 0W-40 European Car Formula. I have been running it in my Frontier VQ40 for a few years and have zero deposits or varnish based on a recent valve cover replacement. It is on currently on sale at WalMart for $25, but you will need 6 qts. for an oil & filter change.

If you can get it, the NISSAN VQ engines run so smooooooth and remain varnish free on Mobil 1 0w-40 European Car Formula.

The VQ 35/37/40 engines are so torquey that I've not experienced any loss of mpg by going from 5w-30 to 0w-40.

What is "0W40/20" ?

The VQ design is going on 25 years old, I think, and wasn't designed to 'need' a -20 weight oil. That oil is spec'd for fuel economy reasons in the US (primarily) and to be clear, this isn't "better" fuel economy that any individual car will see. Automakers aggregate their fuel economy across their entire fleet each model year, so over hundreds of thousands or millions of vehicles.

Use 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40, or 5W-40 in yours. You will NOT see any fuel economy impact.

Euro oils perform better in hot engines, they have stricter noack and cleanliness/deposit requirements. Regular api oils only have to do 15% noack which isn't great and don't have strict deposit tests. MB 229.5 oils are 9% noack max.

Motomaster is repackaged Pennzoil. Motomaster 5W40 will serve you well. Shell (Pennzoil) 0W40 is generally a step down from 5W40. Each company has its horse for a race, and in ACEA A3 category, that is SHell Helix PurePlus 5W40 (Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40, Motomaster Euro 5W40). Mobil1 horse is 0W40.

Depends how much you love your VQ37VHR. Redline 5w30 is very popular in Z community. I use it in my 2017 370Z. I dont track or drift. I do get spirited and since it's only summer use, I do see 230F oil temps once in a while. ( no external oil cooler yet). I'm currently using Mobil1-108A Vietnam version (HW/PG) for oil filter.

Dont use the Nissan oil filter. They are junk! I had pictures somewhere cant find it. Dealerships will use whatever oil they have in bulk. It might even be 0W20. Ask for 5W30.

What type of driving do you do and what the owner's manual says about the engine oil?

Here I like to shop synthetic oils at Walmart and these are a few that will suit your needs:

Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30
Mobil 1 Euro 0W-40
Mobil 1 ESP x4 0W-40
Pennzoil Plarinum Euro 5W-40
Castrol 0W-30 A3/B4 (not available at Walmart)
Castrol 0W-40 A3/B4
Castrol 5W-30 A3/B4

M1 0W-40 or M1 ESP 0W-30 would be great choices for that motor.
VQ’s ‘seem’ to do best on thick 30-weights or thin 40-weights.
