What new car under $25k is the best "value"?

Be a little more specific. What type car? Use? RWD, AWD, FWD? Annual mileage? How long will you keep the car?

What are you looking for in a car? Reliability, refinement, horsepower, handling, fun-to-drive, low hassle? Value means different things to different people. For me, the $18,900 I just paid for a new 07 Passat 2.0T was the best value for me. Everytime I drive it, it brings a smile to my face. But it will requires me to keep on top of maintenance and be aware of the typical VW idiosyncracies. No big deal for me because I like cars and I'm a VW fanatic. But it would be a horrible car for my mom who hates thinking about cars.

VeeDubb,
New Passats are selling for less than $19K?
What part of the country do you live in?

Well, it says to the left of his post, "Ohio".

I guess what I meant was a car that "slipped under the radar" in terms of $$$.

Many models are worthy of their popularity, but you can't make the best deal on them.

If you just need a relatively reliable commuter car that has lots of power, is low maintenance, and delivers good economy on regular fuel, get a 07 Toyota Camry V6. The engine is very, very powerful...but it isn't fun to drive at all. Price is about $21,000 + TTL for a LE V6 model.

That's including your trade-in, right?

scion xb, new design, 2.4L camry engine, power windows/locks, cruise standard. under 18k msrp, gets 30mpg +

If needed a subcompact with good fuel economy I'd go with Honda Fit...Compact I would go Nissan Sentra I cant't believe how cheap they are going for with good EPA numbers to boot!...For a full-size I was thinking Malibu...great price...and with the 4-cyl great mpg...

No, that is the price before TTL. I got $7k (KBB was $6900) for my trade-in which brought the price down to $11,900 before TTL. I wasn't looking for a new car until I accidentally bumped into this deal.

Prebis,
Mine stickered at $23,820 which is a base model with no options (although Passats are well equipped standard). Right now, you should have no problems getting 4 to 5k off sticker anywhere in the country (assuming their is still inventory). VW is unloading the 07s for the 08s. There is some hefty dealer cash and plus I got another $1000 for owner loyalty. But even without the loyalty, $1500-$2000 off invoice is very realistic.

What's most important? Reilability? Fun to drive? Do you like to do your own maintenance? How many people regularly ride in the car? Do you need a large trunk?

For me it is the best combination of fun-to-drive, safety and roominess. I drive alone 80% of the time (fun-to-drive is needed), but the other 20% my family is with me, including a toddler (roominess and safety kicks in here).

I don't stress over reliability on modern cars. They don't leave you stranded anymore and I do enough preventive maintenance to make any car last. The difference between "best" and "worst" reliability is usually about one to two extra unscheduled visits to the mechanic per year, on average. Far too little hassle to give up everyday driving pleasure.

Plus, with all the time I spend on BITOG, I need to make this time investment payoff....so I need a car that is REALLY hard on oil

To me a VW Jetta or the aforementioned Passat is fun to drive. A Camry, while very reliable, bores me to tears.

The best deal that I saw when I was looking was a base model 4x4 regular cab 3/4 ton Dodge long bed, with a stick, Cummins, towing and off road package for less than $23k. Sales incentives at the time could have dropped it to less than $21k. A vehicle that allows a proletariat to do useful work, is probably the best bet for longest lasting vehicle for the money, and fun to drive for some :^)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I test drove a Camry SE which is the sporty version. While the engine definitely had grunt, the handling couldn't touch the Passat's even with the "sports suspension." The other day while driving by myself with no other cars around, I took a 25 mph circular off ramp at about 55 mph. The tires started slipping but the body roll was still pretty much under control. Felt a lot like my friend's A4, except this car is also practical.
