My cousin is looking at the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Hyundai Tucson how is the quality of these suvs and what about crash tests? Are they as good as say Toyota and Honda ?

I love the '08 Kia Spectra 2.0l. For what it is, the build quality seems good, runs great, smooth, quite. Good little car. From what I've been told the older Hyundai/Kia models (something like '03 and below) are nowhere near the quality that they are today.

I chose a 2008 Sonata over Honda and Toyota because I couldn't find any reason to pay the premium the other two charge. I've owned them all and the performance, build quality, ergonomics of my Sonata are great.

Pick up the Consumer Reports new car buying guide on any newstand and it will have all of the information you are asking about. Hyundai is putting out excellent products.

My friend and I rented a 2010 Sonata and I really liked the car. It had about 20K miles but drove as if it was new.

The 09 Accent with 9k miles has been great so far. After 1500 miles I went to Amsoil XL 5w-20.

My daughter bought a Genesis Coupe track. She likes it more than the Camry Solara 3.0 V6 she had.
Fit,finish, paint equal or better the Toyota, mechanically it feels more refined than the underpowered Solara, the brembo brakes are awesome.

Engine knock, transmission issues, electrical issues and wiper motors/assembly die just outside of warranty. They also rarely follow up on their infamous warranty. Just look up a Hyundai or Santa Fe forum and make some fresh coffee.

Hyundai's made huge strides.. but when they need parts.. you're going back to the dealer moreso than the aftermarket.

Is your cousin a female looking for a small suv with a good value if so then yes.

I don't think a Genesis Coupe and a Solara are targeted at the same type of consumers.

And, in reply to the OP, I've only been in the outgoing gen Sonata. My impression is that it rides nice, but while the interior looks nice, it felt cheap. I like the looks of the newest Santa Fe and Tucson.

My opinion: Late model Hyundai = good quality for price
Older model Hyundai = not so much

Fact: 1,875 trouble free miles on mine

I was in the market for a small SUV, and I test drove both of these. I liked the Tucson a lot, but it is small. The Santa Fe is a nice size, and comes with a lot of nice standard features however the styling is goofy and will be redesigned for 2011.

The 2011 Sorento is out, and although very boring is a nice vehicle. I had one as a rental car for a business trip, and I liked the standard features like Steering wheel audio controls, Trip Computer, Sirius, Bluetooth and the USB port. It is Kia's version of the Santa Fe, built off of the same platform with many of the same features. It was a decent driver, but very boring and bland. Even with all of the standard features it had, I didn't want to keep it.

Might want to check out Equinox and Terrain. These two have a lot more features, are a nice size and are very well put together. They would be my first choice, followed by the Hyundai/Kia offerings. I really didn't see anything else that stood out to me.

Quality wise, I think all of the above are fine, well built vehicles. All have 100k warranties, the GMs have the excellent Ecotec 4 cyl engines, and optional V6s that are looking good also. My father has a 2007 Tucson, and loves it. He has about 60k miles on it, and the only problem he had was a seal that blew out on the A/C compressor. It was fixed under warranty without issue, and he was given a rental car.

I would definitely consider the Ford Escape...I just came off a long road trip and saw plenty of them on the road...I spoke to a few owners while they were filling up and each one said they loved them and had no issues with them whatsoever.

I know of two people that have escapes and have had a lot of trouble with them
front end and transfer case 35,000 miles and 40,000

LOL.
Wife's 2003 Elantra is at 148k miles or so and hasn't had a SINGLE repair or problem.

This is what I've heard from every other HMC vehicle owner. Dunno how this thread devolved into a Hyundai bashfest since the OP was asking about specific models, but I know several professional mechanics who have recommended HMC vehicles to their family & friends in the past 5ish years and none of them have had any issues or necessitated any repairs that weren't normal preventative maintenance.

A co-worker has a Santa Fe. I'd guess it's an '06 model. It's a FWD with the 2.7L engine. He loves it. I'm not that impressed with it overall. As far as reliability, I don't think it's required any repairs, so it's been great in that regard. But the squeaks and rattles are incessant. Some people just don't hear that stuff. I'm very sensitive to squeaks and rattles, so it'd drive me crazy.

I've heard from a few people with similar experiences. The cars are generally reliable, just not engineered all that well, as far as NVH goes. Although the car rarely "breaks", the driving experience isn't super, for all the noises and harshness and crude suspension tuning.

We briefly looked at the Hyundai Entourage and Kia Sedona when we bought our '07 T&C. The Korean vans had a lot of equipment for the price paid, but the material choice in the interior was not satisfying, and they felt cheap overall. Fundamentals like cup holders were flimsy and not rugged at all. Our kids could've torn that van up.

For the average car unenthusiast (like my co-worker, who just wants something that turns on everytime he turns the key), I'm sure they're fine vehicles. If you're the more discerning type, I'd probably look elsewhere.

I guess the squeaks and rattles are also depending on a LOT of factors - have a friend who owns the same model that my wife does (Elantra 2003), and although his has less miles, i always thought it's not as quiet and solid riding in it - my wife's is completely rattle free and solid, at 148k miles - no problems at all.

Comparatively I always think our next door neighbor's Civic rattles, but not the other neighbor's Accord...

can't generalize those things either...depends on how harsh one treats their cars...
