AVG or Avast, dpending on the machine. Personally, I think the AVG is doing a slightly better job, with less use of resources, but both are among the best, according to several tests in computer magazines.
Another great program, working well together with most antivirus programs, is the Threatfire.

I posted 2 different questions about Spyware and Antivirus programs and they were thrown together as one post. Why?

They are two different programs for different things.

AVG Free does not contain spyware protection anymore as per their site. Avast seems to be the way to go if you want a free antivirus/anti-spyware solution.

I am using OneCare from Microsoft on my home computers and it seems to work well. I have yet to become infected with a virus, or spyware, so far as I can tell. Microsoft offers a lot of free Beta testing for OneCare. After doing a couple of Beta tests, they offered me membership to the OneCare Perpetual Beta. This means free protection for up to three computers. There are only a few Beta versions released each year, an I have yet to have one cause me any issues. Most of the time I am simply running the latest version that has been released for public use.
