All the good dives from here to Kansas City I have been to barely even have Facebook pages. When a group of us go to lunch from work on the company dime we go to whatever hole in the wall takes credit cards. Always get better food than the fancy well advertised places in the bigger cities.

It's long gone, but I'd occasionally go to this place fairly near me that was legendary for big portions and good prices called Nibs. I heard it was named after Nibs Price, a football and basketball coach at Cal, but that could have just been a myth. But a fire took it out and it never really reopened. The owners reopened a new place further away before opening a new "Nibs" even further away. I tried one of those places but didn't necesaarily come back because the location was kind of inconvenient.

I don't know about favorites, but I can certainly talk about my experiences with divey burger places. One was at The Oasis in Menlo Park, California. I think I had the Oasis Burger, which was this weird concoction of a burger (I think) topped with Canadian bacon and other stuff. Once I was just out in Oakland and found a place owned by a Korean-American family that made a really good cheeseburger. I'm thinking it wasn't even that complicated - just a thawed out frozen patty and bun with lettuce, pickles, and tomato. It's kind of hard to mess that up.

But one that is different is Red's Java House in San Francisco. Had the cheeseburger there once with a beer and it was good. The place is iconic. Used to be frequented by dockworkers, but those jobs slowly went away due to container shipping. But it managed to stay alive as the bougie locals kept it around, as well as the blue collar workers in the neighborhood. The joke is that often they'll have a sign that says "No lettuce. No tomato. Don't ask." However, their burgers are just ordinary foodservice patties served on a sourdough roll.

I love finding hole in wall places. I went on a work trip to Philadelphia in 2019 with my boss and her husband. On the way back from a casino in New Jersey we were starving. It was 2ish in the morning. I found a Mexican restaurant online that was open super late. My boss" husband said it reminded him of his moms cooking. It was really good. In a weird strip mall.

I live full time in a hotel that has a micro-brewery and a restaurant. They make pretty good burgers so that's my preferred joint. There are a few gastro pubs within a few minutes of walk with good food, too.

Little Bits Grill in Oak Island, NC

Their small is a half lb. Large is almost a lb. No fries needed. Prices are still about the same as they were 10 years ago.

Absolutely NOT a dive bar.

I'm not quite sure about the whole combining of dive bar and burgers in the same sentence. They don't have to overlap. A lot of the best burgers I've had are in less than dive-y surroundings. I've had extremely good burgers in sit-down restaurants, although some only had them as bar bites. I absolutely loved the Prime Burger at different Ruth's Chris locations during their happy hour in the bar area, although back then different locations might have different prices. I was on a long-ish work assignment where I went to one that charged $6, although I'd typically just get the steak sandwich. Another location was $7. I think now it's $9 (or more depending on location). That was better than any dive bar burger I've ever had.

When I was in college there was this one place I went to for a burger and fries (or onion rings) the Tuesday before my first final. And I did it for all 8 semesters. That place was really good and it's still around, although the prices are kind of high now.
