Came home from work and it's gone. Nobody seems to know where it walked off to.

It's an overflow thing. If the tub gets too full it runs out that grate/ screen thingy.

It may just be the picture but you might want to check the seal between the tub and the drain pipe. If its ever needed it looks like a lot of water would end up running down the wall.

if you can access it from the back or bottom you could install a new overflow pipe for less then jsut the part .

What's that Bob weight looking thing do? I don't have that. I'm just missing the plate and screw for all I know. House was built in 58 if that matters.
The weighted bob thing is the tub drain stopper mechanism if you have an old-style trip lever activated drain. It is NOT used to block sewer gas since: (a) there is a P-trap under the tub floor drain, and (b) the bob weight is positioned above the tub floor drain path when in the unstopped/open position. I suspect your tub was subsequently upgraded and now has a pop-up style drain stopper as shown in this video. I upgraded my tubs with pop-up drain stoppers in the 1990's.

The missing plate was there when we moved into the house in 1974. It's never been "upgraded" unless done before then which I doubt. The only access to that area behind the tub is by tearing out a wall. Something I'm not going to do.

Never had any smells out of it either.
