good evening guys.i know it may sound like a stupid question but i am a noob at this additive stuff, what is the difference between seafoam vs auto rx?
thanks,
whitearrow->>>----------------->

seafoam is for cleaning anything in the fuel stream as its normally added via the intake (valves, pistons mostly) and auto rx is for cleaning anything that is lubricated by oil: rockers, covers, oiil passages; as its added oil

thanks tomcat.seafoam says that you can add it to the crankcase also.so, would auto rx be a better choice for cleaning an engine via adding to the oil?
thanks,

Seafoam leaves your wallet a lot heavier than the snake oil, err ARX does.

You are entitled too your opinion, so that will be my comment.

I have never used Seafoam so I cannot make a comment.

sorry... I only know (a million) people who have added it via the intake. I (ignorantly) was not aware of the other application

Seafoam has: Pale Oil, Naphtha and Isopropyl alcohol

Auto-RX is a combination of 3 Ester oils.

Auto-RX would have good cleaning ability along with good lubrication ability.

As far as oil goes, it's better to add ARX than SF. ARX will get rid of sludge slowly and safely, while SF could break off chunks of sludge that will clog things. Not a good thing.

IIRC, that's the general consensus.

As for gas, I've done the pour through the brake booster bit in both the Camaro and the Zed. The Camaro would stumble, stall, and give a nice smoke screen while pouring. The Zed, OTOH, would go from a 700rpm to 4500, with little smoke.

Also got some black liquid out of the tail pipes on the former.

I've use Seafoam in all three applications, crankcase, fuel tank, and intake and have been really pleased with it.
They don't sell ARx here.

The difference is, there is no debate as to whether seafoam does what it claims to do.

And it costs like 1/5 of what a bottle of ARx does.

Neither product is a sponsor here - the difference is, Seafoam never was.

Well, maybe that's a little harsh... I don't know... AutoRx contains sheep juice and no other product that I'm aware of has sheep juice. It has some pretty mystical properties, or so I've been told. People have claimed that under the influence of AutoRx they saw, felt, and heard wonderful, beautiful things that no other substance on earth could compare with.

So, what'll it be... You want the red pill or the blue pill?

Indeed there isn't. It doesn't do a single thing.

See, if I was to disagree with that, I could back my argument up with things like facts, pictures, and data as well as testimonials.

You just have testimonials. Now, let the testimonials begin. TESTIFY!

(Note to the new guy - this just is something we do in this part of the forum. Don't get the wrong idea. We're all friends over in General and Off Topic.)

Because that's where Seafoam is the least ineffective. In the intake it presents a lot of smoke for the easily amused and it sometimes does something beneficial even though hot water does the same thing without the mysticism of the smoke machine for a lot less than $10/pint. Seafoam is almost as expensive as ARX.

I bought a can of Deep Creep and Seafoam hoping to cut carbon I could observe in a small engine. 3 applications and no change. 3 hours operation with the right stuff was a lot more effective and cost less than $1. I can't find a good reason to put light oil and alcohol in my oil. There are better additives for fuel and oil that either cost way less than $80/gallon or earn their keep.

Ya. I figured I could get it at Autobarn or somewhere but I like to buy off the shelf due to my poor planning ahead.
Thanks!

I thought Seafoam does a good job. I tore down a gunked up VW engine I had given the three prong treatment and it really did clean it up.
About the intake cleaning, the smoke only lasts until the carbon is gone. It's pretty easy to tell when the job is done.

Seafoam is a solvent. As such it's really good at removing deposits in the fuel intake stream. It works good as a purge since it's got virtually no dwell time in the engine. It works good as a fuel injector clean since it's metered in such a manner to perform its task.

In the engine, solvents have a problem. To clean the entire engine they need to be either in large amounts or powerful enough to work quickly. The alter a few things in the oil in terms of properties that aren't favorable. Fine and good, your engine can tolerate a 12oz (or whatever it is) of a degreaser/cutting agent that will dissolve xx amount of varnish or otherwise stuff called "deposits". No problem.

You can also use an engine flush that will be more volume and probably more powerful at the end of an OCI. No problem.

Either of these things, done routinely, will probably keep your engine clean. I don't think either will decoke your rings ..but lets ignore that for the moment.

Now suppose you've got an engine that has a healthy level of deposits already. You can do the Seafoam thing for "how many" OCI? You can to the kero in a can motor flushes before you change it ..for "how many" OCI's? You can add a quart of Rislone at every OCI or every other OCI ..MMO the same thing..

How much does that cost and can you say that the introduction is designed to be transparent with the host oil?

Even without my semi-direct involvement with Frank, I was sold on Auto-Rx from my first use and every time since for the issues that I encountered. I imagine if I used the other methods I would have had like results. It may have taken longer and may have cost more money.

It all comes down to what works for you, but I think many need to truly weigh the costs.
