What is the difference between GMC & Chevy truck ?

I have one question: Some older gent told me that if a guy has a GMC truck and takes it to a CHEVY dealership, they wouldnt help the man. Only if it was a emergency. Is this b.s. or true? Help me dispell this "old wife tale" as it sure sounds like it.

False. Any dealer that works on one truck will work on the other. It's the same parts, probably the same service manual, etc.

I am not 100% sure about warranty work, but there shouldn't be a problem there either.

Yeah, I think the gent either had alzheimers or was just a wive tale teller, as I thought that GMC owned/owns CHEVROLET. Just my thought on that. Dad had a 77' GMC stepside 1/2 ton truck for years with a manual trans and straight six engine. Hauled a lot of firewood and coal with that truck. Thanks for the info and reply Ranger,

you're making the other common mistake of thinking 'GM' and 'GMC' are one and the same; they are NOT.
'GM' is General motors, the corporate 'owner' of Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac.
'GMC' is the truck-only division of GM.

got it?

I've always assumed the only reason GMC is still around is due to franchise agreements with dealers. If they axe GMC, it's not like the former-GMC dealers can start selling Chevy trucks if there's already a local Chevy dealer with rights to the area.

Toughest duty cycle on the planet, if any other brand is used there is no warranty. Ford even specifically prohibits my kind of mods in writing.

And anyone who thinks their big trucks are 'lame' simply hasn't driven one. My Dmax is fantastic pulling a 33 foot fifth wheel rig at 19k pounds all over the country.
One of my friends has a duramax I always tell him the dealer screwed him 'cause the engine is too quiet for a diesel. Those engines have get up and go power and the MPGs are impressive.

GM has given up the light duty truck market, their current 3500 is a joke, compared to say the Ford F550. If you want a GM that can work as had as an F550 you have to get their big version which is stupid big for what it is. The F550 cab and size is about the same as the 1 ton, except with a nice beefy frame, ie its built like a truck.

As a GM fan and the owner of a Silverado I really hope they get their act together. Cause I won't be happy if my next truck is a Ford or Dodge.

Not sure how you come to those conclusion. The new 2500HD is totally kicking butt and you cannot compare a 3500 with a Ford F550, not the same class of truck. Compare it with the F350 and maybe 450.

They don't have anything to compare to the F550 unless you get a Kodiak or whatever they call it, but that's a larger truck.

GM used to make a nice light duty commercial truck, but for some reason they gave up that market to Ford and Dodge.

okay - I see your point, there.

Im still hunting for this gmc truck, most I saw on craiglist is over 200k miles

some are 300k miles. Hard to find low miles truck atm.

My problem is I want to tow a bit more, say a 25k pound trailer and machine combo, I also want a dump body.

Problem with the 1 ton GMC trucks is just that, they are a 1 ton truck. GM used to offer more heavy duty frames and running gear under the pickup cabs. Smaller trucks are nice you can park they in tighter places.

I was just at the dealer comparing them.

Put a 2011 Silverado or GMC 1 ton alongside a Ford F450/550. Its night and day. The frames, suspension, brakes etc are all hugely upgraded on the heavier duty Ford's. But they have the standard pickup cab so they don't really drive or park any different than any other dually. Price is also quite different too, the F550 is about $25k more.

To get the same components on a GM I would have to upgrade to their Kodiak or whatever they call it. It looks like a real truck but really isn't. Problem is its also larger like a real truck, which defeats the purpose of a light duty dump truck. At that point your better off getting a small Freightliner or Mack.

Now if GM put the 4500/5500 frame under the standard Silverado cab we would be in business, but they don't.

I actually don't care for either truck, I don't really have a lot of faith in Fords new engines. So I'm going to wait another year since I hear a new Silverado is coming down the line. Maybe GM will build what I really want.

Believe it or not, that is actually true here. The Chevrolet dealer does not service GMC vehicles, although the GMC dealer has no problem servicing Chevrolets (sedans, vans, etc. included).

Yes, an all new Full size truck and SUV is coming (I am involved in this) but not until 2014 model. The pickups will be introduced first this time (SUV was first introduced then pickups for the '07 GMT900). I don't think you're ideal truck will be produced then...but I may be wrong too

But I can ell you this - there are some great trucks coming our way!
