What is the difference between GMC & Chevy truck ?

I prefer GMC over the Chevys for 3 reasons:

1.) dealer network - GMC dealers are usually better beings that they are often tied to Buick and Cadillac franchises.

2.) They look better in most cases

3.) DENALI. I have a Sierra Denali crewcab and Chevy does not offer a similiar model. The Denali line has more luxury and the 6.2L 403hp motor (but you can now get the 6.2 in a chevy) as well as full time AWD.

I feel like I have to mention this every time this topic gets brought up (GMC redundancy) but GM has done studies that say that people who buy GMC overwhelmingly have Ford as 2nd choice, Chevrolet as 3rd.

To me, a redundant brand that does not make.

It's weird how some people think these two are completely different vehicles. Talking to them, you'd swear they were made by different companies!

Maybe in the '60s they were a little different.

I think the base engine in the GMC C15 was a 305V6 and the base in the Chevrolet was a 235

They used to be very different.

True, but not for the past 35 years or so.....my wife's Grandpa had a 1979 GMC Jimmy...nice one, Maroon with a painted white roof...but very little difference between it and a 1979 Chev Blazer....

Years ago GMCs were better built and higher quality . Heavy duty parts and I remember tha auto trans would have roller thrust bearings and the Chevs would have bronze thrust bearings . Today they have different options and packages. Just something to fool the consumer.

The new GM trucks are kind of lame in regards to how they are built. IMHO Ford and Dodge are built more like trucks.

GM has given up the light duty truck market, their current 3500 is a joke, compared to say the Ford F550. If you want a GM that can work as had as an F550 you have to get their big version which is stupid big for what it is. The F550 cab and size is about the same as the 1 ton, except with a nice beefy frame, ie its built like a truck.

As a GM fan and the owner of a Silverado I really hope they get their act together. Cause I won't be happy if my next truck is a Ford or Dodge.

That sounds like brilliant salesman-speak! Something you can't see, but seems believable. The lie could go so far as "GM doesn't want you to know this, but..."

Back in the 50s otherwise similar cars made in different factories sometimes had different bumpers... maybe due to the tooling available?

Not sure how you come to those conclusion. The new 2500HD is totally kicking butt and you cannot compare a 3500 with a Ford F550, not the same class of truck. Compare it with the F350 and maybe 450.

For the past several years, that would be a different steering wheel, and different fabric on the seats.

(And not even that, for models with leather or vinyl covered seats).

They don't have anything to compare to the F550 unless you get a Kodiak or whatever they call it, but that's a larger truck.

GM used to make a nice light duty commercial truck, but for some reason they gave up that market to Ford and Dodge.

You used to be able to get Mercury and Plymouth trucks.

Those trucks ceased to exist long before their marques got the axe.

And yet, GMC carries on.

I love that 429 powered Mercury....

GM will never, IMOA, cut GMC trucks. Too many people that think it is an upscale model over and above Chevy, or actually built different, for them to do so. There are actually people who say "I would never buy a Chevy" who drive GMC trucks.

If GM added the upper end luxury/performance options reserved for GMC to the Chevy trucks they could get rid of GMC because the trucks are identical otherwise except for some slight cosmetics differences. I just don't see that happening though.

Chevy is considered a different truck vs GMC by too many people loyal to one brand or the other. I never understood it but how it is.

for some of us the difference is very distinct. My certified aftermarket upfitter only gives a warranty on GMC, NOT Chevy.

Toughest duty cycle on the planet, if any other brand is used there is no warranty. Ford even specifically prohibits my kind of mods in writing.

And anyone who thinks their big trucks are 'lame' simply hasn't driven one. My Dmax is fantastic pulling a 33 foot fifth wheel rig at 19k pounds all over the country.

That may be the case but it doesn't make the GMC truck better or mean it is built to a different standard than the Chevy. It is the exact same truck with a few cosmetic differences.
