well my integra has 94000kms on it, i live out in the westcoast of vancouver, bc, and i've been using regular oil from the very first day, but now i want to go into synthetic, but there are so many brands out there and some ppl say some arent even realy synthetic, so my question is what is a good synthetic oil for daily driver, from what i read most mention mobil 1 or amsoil, i try to search a thread on here describing each oil and what it does to your engine but couldnt find it, thats what i was told on another board was to come here for answers, please help this newbie out
thanks

Lemme see: Mobil1, Pennzoil Platinum, QState,Esso, etc. Heck! You can even go with Wallymart's Tech2K full synthetic or Crrrapy tire's Motomaster Full Sync.

Integra goes well with 5W30 so long as the volatility is low (full sync's volatility is way lower than that of dino anyways).

Also, my recommendation is to go with approx. 8~10kms OCI for integras to go with full synthetics.

Q.

p.s. I'm in Rmd.

First off: Putting synthetic oil in a well used engine is not usually recommended - though many have done it without problems. Reason being: synthetics tend to find leaks in engines that normal conventional oil did not. I'll let someone else explain the technical side of this.

In terms of REAL synthetics vs fake synthetics: Fake synthetics are a group III oil packed with additives to allow it to perform similarly to a group IV or V. The advantage of real synthetic oils = long usage intervals due to resistance to shearing/breaking down and extreme temperature tolerance. If you want a REAL synthetic go with: Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline, etc... "fake/group III synthetics" include: Castrol syntec, Penn Platinum, etc... I believe Mobil is now using Group III in their EP oil.

For a daily driver - you won't see much difference between the two as long as you keep the interval below 10,000 miles. Whenever increasing your drain interval it is always recommended to get a UOA to see how the oil is performing/lasting in your engine.

Want a true synthetic? I'd recommend Amsoil. Contact Pablo - an amsoil representative here who is a site sponsor. Looking for a good group III synthetic? This board likes PenPlat and Castrol Syntec is showing some good UOAs.

Your question is pretty broad so you'll get a lot of opinions. Either way, using a good oil will make your engine last - the key is to change it often or get a UOA to run it out.

sorry to ask but what does the abreviations of oci and UOAs is? i guess oci is oil change intervals?

yes i'm leaning more towards amsoil right now
i always though when using synthetic oil you would have to change it every 3000kms or was i hearing things?
thanks guys

quest: which part of richmond you from? any place i can get amsoil for cheap locally?

I still believe you can't beat mobil 1 oil. However Amsoil is also a good oil. Still waiting on more UOA's on Penzoil Platium. Past these three is not for me.

Regrettably, Amsoil and Redline is not cheep in Vancouver area(assuming that you are in GVRD area??)

You shall be able to pick up some Amsoil from Crrraaapy Tires. Alternatively, if you want Redline, check out Mopac on Kingsway and a few other GVRD locale.

Oh and BTW: you may be able to custom-order from Lordco but they may "ding" you for the pricing. (unless you buddy up with them and/or has a custom account).

I agree with the rest of the posters that switching to full syn this late may not be a good idea afterall. I would go with any cheeper syncs and enjoy the rest of the ride along the way.

well i am going to give Amsoil a try and if all fells i can always go back to my regular oil

Quest i live in vancouver 5mins away from richmond, i found Amsoil at Garage5 they are selling it for 8.50 a litre let me know if you find somehwere else cheaper, thanks bud

8.50 from Garage5 is about the best price you can get.

I'm currently not aware of any place else in GVRD that would sell Amsoil for anything cheaper.

Good luck!

You were hearing things. If you're going to stick with a short 3,000 mile OCI, might as well just stick with a conventional oil such as Pennzoil, Havoline/Chevron, Castrol GTX, etc.

"i always though when using synthetic oil you would have to change it every 3000kms "

Very few cases where this change interval wouldn't be throwing away good dino let alone syn oil. Dino SM 5-30 ought to get your integra 8kms OCI and syn 10-15kms.

Why do you want syn oil? What is the name of the Canadian company that makes a great group III syn. Makaveli read up the older posts on this web site. In fact don't waste your money on syn.oil .

The first question you should ask is what will synthetic oil to do for you?

It's possible that an AutoRX treatment along with continued use of the appropriate grade of current SM/GF-4 oils will give you the best bang for your buck.

Can you get a Conoco oil up there? Motorcraft/Kendall/TropArtic/Phillips 66?

None of the above are up here as far as I've seen, other than Motorcraft (although you'd pay ridiculous prices since it's only sold at Ford dealers)

If I could get it, I would try Valvoline Maxlife synthetic 5W30 in the Integra. It seems to work very well in my 2004 S2000 (10W30).
