What would be considered the best motor oil you can buy? This would have to do with the make up of the oil[sulphur content boil points etc]......Just wondering if there is one manufacture that stands alone in quality...I have always thought Amsoil/Red Line, but have no scientific data or hard core testing to prove it...

For most gas-powered engines that specify an API SJ or higher oil in anything from 5w30 to 10w40, I'm going to say you'd be hard pressed to do better than GC.

I know little about diesel oils, so I can't comment on a "best" HDEO.

If you are to flip the argument around, the answer can be "none".

All motor oils out there are all good, and it's all dependent on how the operating conditions, duration, etc. No 2 oils are used/operated under the same conditions, no matter how "closed" controlled you are setting the operational environment.

my 2c's worth

who makes the best car period?
who makes the best pizza period?
who is the best actor period?

not one single answer..

Only your vehicle can answer your question. It decides what's best - not you!

It's clearly an easy question. The absolute best oil is the one you have enough confidence in to change at a sane interval. That oil will always treat you right.

I will add that UOA's prove it's NOT Redline

I don't think anyone on here has questioned RL more than myself. I've beat RL to death on here. In my "opinion", RL's reputation comes from their racing oils, not street. I'm inclined to believe that their racing oils are great, but street oils so so...

On paper and through oil analysis, currently I'd say Amsoil for extended drains. All of their oils perform very well. On a cost/performance basis, all the SM oils are great. PP is a standout along with Havoline/MC.

I excluded Elf, Motul and other exotic brands only bc we have very limited information/data to really hold an opinion on them.

*Also realize that this changes frequently due to API changes and additive chemistry changes. Formulas are always changing sometimes for better, sometimes worse. Mobil 1's changes over the years have been for the worse IMO, while Amsoil has stepped up with the SM spec oils. Again, just my opinion.

Stupid question, but what does "GC" stand for? I keep seeing it all over threads, but no one ever spells it out.

Overall, I vote for AMSOIL. Longest extended oil changes backed up with a parts and labor warranty. More synthetics than any other oil company in the world. The first to market API synthetic oils. The only one to compare their products by name against all others. No warranty issues listed by the Better Business Bureau for the past 3 years. There website has more oil and application information than any other I've seen.
