What is Synerlec ?

I wonder what other additives Synerlec from Royal Purple is related to, or if it is unique or very similar to other additives that do essentially the same thing ?
 
It's a sulfurized ester, from what we know. It's proprietary so we'll likely never get the full story.

Plenty of other oils use esters, yes. I'm not sure what Royal Purple's are, and what they do. Again, proprietary information.

Is there something specific you're trying to figure out? We've seen a lot of good results from their oils using Synerlec.

I'm trying to find an oil to reduce wear to a minimum in my older BMW 318i with 300k miles. I'm wondering if Mobil 1 0W-40 or GC would have additives like synerlec (or as effective).
 
I asked my brother, a chemical engineer (specialization in polymers), about what a "sulfurized ester" is. His response:


Sulfurization is similar to vulcanization of rubber. It cross-links esters with disulfide groups. Likely a cost-effective way to make an oil more viscous.


I'm sure that RP, GC, or Mobil 1 0w40 would all work well in your application. Mobil 1 0w40 gets the nod for having a good VI, which means it will be thinner at startup.

This does suggest an ester composition, as esters' polarity do "bond" to metal surfaces as they describe above.
 
I have no idea what Synerlec is. But it could be similar to Lubrication Engineers' Monolec, or even Schaeffers' Penetro. I'm sure there are other small companies that boost their additive packages with proprietary chemistry too.

Sulfur is not ideal for automotive lubricants. Can have corrosion issues.

Maximum sulfur limit is 5,000ppm per the API.

Look at Royal Purple's level:

PQIA
 
esters are group v + polar by nature. there are so many esters as they are made in a lab to meet whatever needs the oil formulator wants to meet!!!
