Forgive me for being nieve but I have been using fram for years without any problems. But since I joined this board, I have heard nothing but bad things. Whats the issue?

the single biggest beef about Fram is the fact that they use cardboard end caps. although apparently so does (Honda or Toyota, cant remember which) and some people have cut open the Frams and found gaps in the sealing that would allow unfiltered oil to pass through.

I have a friend who uses fram orange cans exclusively and has 220k on his celica. and years ago I used Frams. at one point Fram was actually tested by consumer reports and filtered better than any other filter they tested. of course, fram has changed hands and construction since then.

personally, I would pop the few extra bucks and get the Fram Tough Guard - it filters better and is of better construction.
I've used several over the last year. especially since the local auto store bundles them with oil deals.
of course, with the price point of that filter ($6-8) , there are more solid choices out there: Napa Gold (currently on sale this month) or Purolator Pure One (around $6. or less on amazon - and there is a rebate from purolator)

The Frams make your private parts shrink

I see. So basically the purolator is cunstructed better than the fram, and both are the same as far as the price goes

That's basically the argument. Why spend the same money on a cheaply made filter. Heck, I'd pay extra for a better filter if that's what it took .... but it doesn't have to be that way. I just bought 4 Purolator PureOne filters off Amazon for $2.50 each, including the tax, after the Purolator rebate of $2 each. Can't get anything even close for that deal.

They are ORANGE!EEEWW LOL

They are of low quality. Probably would never see the difference though if you werent an oil addicted OCD BITOG'er like the rest of us!

Fram's are average filters for the price.

There are filters for the same money that are:

1. Constructed better
2. Have more filter media
3. Have higher efficiency

A Kleenex tissue box is constructed better than the baseline orange can of doom.

All other filters are too.

used them exclusively on our fleet for almost ten years!

Never a problem. Always wondered later what we didn't see!

No one can argue they are cheaply made. But very few have ever had an issue with them.

I have cut open a few Fram (and other Honeywell filters: Honda OEM and Subaru OEM) and there is no doubt the cardboard endcaps and bypass valve seem cheap. And there is no doubt that other better constructed filters exist for the same money.

However, like others have mentioned, who has actually had a problem with them? I ran my previous car (98 Civic) on 7500 mile OCIs like the mfg. recommended with Castrol GTX 5w30 with orange Frams for the 130k I had it. When I sold it with 190k, it did not burn a single drop of oil over 7500 miles nor did it leak. The fuel economy was 35mpg city 40 on highway. And I did my valve lash shortly before selling it and the cams were pristine....no sludge nothing.

Granted since discovering BITOG, I will admit, I cant bring myself to put one on, except for my Subaru since the Honeywell OEM one is the only one that has the right bypass pressure :(. So I'll just do short OCIs on it till my warranty is up (hopefully by then the aftermarket will make a filter that meets Subarus specs). My wifes accord gets a PL14610 every time.

Purolators (and anything made by Purolator for a Subaru application) should have the right bypass pressure, FYI.

It actually doesn't. The PL14612 is rated at 14-18psi and I have confirmed that true (I averaged in the 16psi range on two different filters). The OEM is rated at 23.2 (and I've tested 3 filters, with 2 trials each to confirm that as fact with a +-.4psi error range).

The PL14460 for the early Subarus does have the right bypass pressure but not ADBV and it doesn't fit the new ones anyway...it's larger in diameter and will hit my exhaust manifold.

nothing wrong with fram filters......the only problem is from intenet users who cut them open and have no idea what they are looking at.

Then what is GOOD about them then? What makes a FRAM a better choice than a Motorcraft filter that costs less?

The cardboard end-caps? The flimsy media support? The poor fitting ADBV? The poor sealing bypass?

Yep, they work. But there are better constructed filters for the money. Often LESS money.

if you read this site you would think that cars are breaking down every day because of a Fram Oil Filter failure...But they are not...

Take any Fram filter and any other competitor's filter and cut them open and compare them. There will be no comparison. Fram will get you 200K+ miles. But so will everybody. And you will either be using a better filter or saving some pocket change in the mean time.
