what is purpose of cabin filter

Ensures the air entering the cabin is free of dust, pollen and odors.

Yes, it should be changed at the correct intervals. Neglect can lead to musty/rotten odors and put strain on the A/C.

It filters the air in the cabin.......

I guess it's up to you to decide if it's important or not. After seeing what mine catches, I won't drive without it. It's also nice to not have to dust the interior as much as a car without a fitler.

If you smell worse than the outside air, then no.

It's not essential but makes the driving experiences pleasanter.

You can prolly get some more life out of yours by taking it out and knocking the crud and critters out of it.

If you really don't want to replace it for whatever reason, just punch the center out of it and reinstall the frame. You won't be any worse off than anyone was 20 years ago before cabin filters.

Same purpose as the air filter on the HVAC unit in your house. It ensures that the air you breathe is free (or close to it) of pollutants, dust, pollen, etc.

Is this an importnt filter to change

Most certainly. A clogged/dirty cabin filter reduces air flow and contributes to funny smells.

What is the purpose of cabin filter in convertible cars such as Z4, Boxster and S2000 ? When the top is down, which is almost 360 days a year in So Cal, dust gets in the car from above is much more than from the vents.

Some are washable so try that if you don't want to spend the money. My frontier has 2 and I found out they are (unofficially) washable. Got them on eBay for about 11 dollars the pair so not really worth washing, and they are much cheaper than at a brick and mortar store. Oh, in just 10,000 miles they were horribly dirty!

Most of the OE filters that come with an HVAC unit are really to keep dust and c.rap out of the fan assembly, heat exchanger and/or the evaporator. Now a lot of people replace them with some sort of aftermarket allergen reducing filter (3M Filtrete etc.)

So I wonder if car makers are installing these filters to keep c.rap out of the evaporator/heater core and the pollen/dust filtering for the human operator is a nice side effect, or vice versa?
