I know the general consensus is every 6 months but my Napa Gold filters are expensive now $30 each (used to be $20) and I only drive 14-15k KM a year so changing it every 6-7k KM is a waste cause the filter would still be good when I take it out. So I adjusted to yearly and right now its been a year since I changed it. But i know a lot who change it every 2 years and say because I dont do a lot of driving 2 years is ok, what you think?

2 years for me would be about 30k KM. I just want to cut on costs if I dont have to waste $30 every year I wont. I cant believe it $30 for a Napa Gold air filter (made by Wix btw)

My last one was two years old when I took it out. Mainly because I changed to a different airbox that uses a different filter or I would have kept going.
Just replaced the original in the Fusion a couple months ago. Would have been about 3 years and 25k miles.

So you think 2yrs is ok? I wonder why manufacturers say every 6 months, is it cause its quick cash for them?

Afterall a dirtier filter actually filters better than a brand new one.

Filter life is determined by the amount of air that flows through, not by time. When I used paper filters, they were changed every 15,000 miles; if there was a lot of highway it would be 20,000 miles.

Now that I am using a K&N filter, it is simply 50,000 mile cleanings. Saving money, too, since only have to buy it once.

I'm in the dusty desert so I get more dirt than the average person. 10k in my jeep and its packed. my diesel pickup has 4k on its air filter and I've noticed lots of black smoke lately. I'm thinking its about ready to be changed

It depend of where you drive and how. Short trip need more filter change. I do replace every 5-6 month. I dont check the milleage really. Dusty roads and stuff like that are the thing to wath for. In my opinion.

The only reason to replace an air filter is if it suffers physical damage (a tear) or it can no longer flow as much air as the engine can draw in at its power peak.
Since a fresh filter can flow way more air than the engine will ever be able to use, it takes a long time for the filter to clog to the point that it can no longer flow as much air as the engine requires.
Six months is really way too often.
Two to three years, or 30K miles is more realistic.
I'm always surprised at how clean an air filter still looks after three years of service.
Of course, if you operate the vehicle in a really dusty environment, all bets are off.

Annually for me

Install a filter minder and remove all of the guess work out of it.

They generally cost less than one filter element, and you will be surprised at how long your elements last, easily recovering the cost of the filter-minder.

I change it when it needs to be changed based on visual observation. For me and my usage, it tends to range between 15 and 30,000 miles depending on how much dirt road dusty driving I've been doing.

Time has nothing to do with it - just the miles and usage.

Probably every 30-50k miles. The cars I maintain have $$$$$ filter elements, so they don't get changed that often.

My nissan say to inspect every 6000km or 3 months and replace every24000km or 12 months. The service manual actually says to blow it out with air. Kinda strange.
