Thanks. I like to work on stuff and turn old junk into something decent. Best way of "recycling" there is.
 
Realistically, any car that's bought in decent shape and sees reasonable maintenance will be durable and reliable.
The question is what you want.
I'd personally be very happy with a seventies Mercedes or BMW and neither would be expensive to keep with both offering good parts availability. I saw a really good 280 SEL 4.5 offered for $7K and the car was virtually perfect, just as an example.
An MGB would be another contender as would a Corvair.
So many possible choices with the extent of your wallet being the only constraint.

I would say this too but I'm biased since I own a 70 Monte Carlo that I've had for over 31 years. It needs work again but I still enjoy it. I transplanted a 396 big block in it back in the mid 90's so it's a fun ride.

They have come up in price over the years so they are not as cheap to buy as they once were and there is a decent after market out there for these cars.
