Ok what if there were NO EPA laws, you lived in a HOT town, say the temp on avg was 95 Deg F and the coldest of cold you ever saw was 50 Deg F. You drove a big old hotted up 1970's era V8 350 Small Block Chev or 351 Ford Windsor.

What oil would you be running!
 
I would try 10w30 which after 10W-40 shears will not be much differnt. 30W, 5W-40, 15w40, 5W-50 and then 15W-50 if I had the patience. Test and compair them via UOA and whatever worked the best used. Then an periodic UOA to maintain everything.
 
I'd move somewhere with a better climate first, then check on my oil.

Come to think of it, New Orleans isn't too far from the temperature range you describe.

Reason 6,735 to get outta Dodge.
 
My father used 10W30 Quaker State Dino oil with 3,000 mile oil and filter changes and after over 150,000 miles and several years of service with engine bought a new vehicle. Engine was still in great shape.

He lived in Central Florida so temperatures would be similar.
 
I would use a heavy duty engine oil like:

- Rotella 15w40
- Rotella Synthetic 5W-40
- Delo 15w40

Agree, and while any of the above oils are excellent, I would probably use Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40.
 
In similar situations here in S. Florida, I have stellar results with M1 15-50. In fact, I even have proof that the synthetic 15-50 M1 outperforms dino Penzoil 10-40. (I know, I know, the comparison is between different viscosities).

My turbo Miata ran plenty of boost, enough to shorten 2 connecting rods. Yet the 120K turbo/race miles were not enough to wear the cylinders or pistons.

My Honda water pumps and Subaru generators all do very well on M1, but the Honda's failed quite early on Penz 10-40. Something to do with heat, viscosity, high loads and continuous use.

DEO are also a very good choice.
