What happened to Fram quality?

The crazy thing about it is that I went ahead and used that crappy looking STP filter! It looked real fuzzy and was collapsed when I took it out. I'll snap a photo if anyone is interested. It's still in my drain can in the garage.

I thought FRAM was the Wal-Mart house brand. Lookin' at the shelf space devoted to the orange.

Not a problem turbochem, like I said "just trying to learn". But you know, I still don't have an answer. Maybe (when I was a lot younger) I was fooled by the "pay me now or pay me later" marketing campaign. Anyway, thanks for the welcome.
 
My question is - Do the ones that look bad still perform as well as the ones that look good?

I do 10k OCIs in my vehicle - planning to leave filter in. Will a bad looking filter go as long as a good looking one?

I agree that it is important to compare the specific model filter for your car. You cannot make a broad brush statement like Purolator Premium Plus filters are the best bang for the buck.

OTOH, I cannot bring myself to spend only $2 on a Supertech filter. I need a "good" oil filter for my car and I will not spend anything less than $5!!. I believe that saving a few bucks on an oil filter is a false economy. I think All filters that are over $5 are better than the under $5 filters. Frams are overpriced for what they are. Except for maybe the X2.

But, of course, to each his own. Some people do 3K oil changes because it is the "life blood" of their engine. Then they use Supertech oil and Filters. Go figure?!?! I personally only use Synthetic oil and expensive oil filters and go 7.5k. 'Cause it is the "life blood" of my engine!
 
Geee; I have run Frams basic filters in my cars for 30+ years and never a problem ( probably 2,000,000+ miles). All my cars were sold with over 140,000 miles on them and never an oil related problem. Now I get into this NG and find that Fram filters are the pits. I'm now afrade to even have one in my garage. Seriouly I think Frams basic filter works but, leaves much to be desired. As you move up Frams chain I think their filters are quite good.
 
Yean, parents have been using Fram oil/air filters in all their cars over the last 20 years with no problems.

Some Frams are really good and some arn't I guess. Same goes for STP filters as the two pictures show on page 2.
 
eddie... its not that FRAM filters are the pits, they are good filters, people just dont think they are worth the price they charge for them. FRAM extraguard is a decent filter but they definately do get better as you move up the chain. I personally like the toughguard line, pretty much the same as the extraguard, but with different media. the extendedguard (X2) is a good filter, but in my opinion its too expensive for an everyday driver.
 
When Pure One are $3 this month at Pep Boys
IMO Fram's stay on the shelf since that's 1/3 of some of their top models and more than their
bottom grade. Hopefully Bosch will keep up the
price pressure rather than just adopt Fram's pricing model.

I can make a broad brush statement that Purolator Plus is the best bang for a penny.

What are you talking about, the PF 2244G for the Ecotec? Rip off. I have caught Purolator L 14536's on sale for $3. Last good sale at Pep Boys, they were out.
 
STP oil filters for my car 9018R are over $5.00 at AutoZone! I forget what the Wal-Mart FRAMs are but I won't use those. I did get 2 Purolators at PepBoys during their sale awhile ago but haven't seen ANY since.

Will have to find a Nappa store somewhere.
 
I stopped using them as soon i heard that they caused startup noise.....happenend in my 95 T-bird with the 4.6.

switched to motorcraft....never had startup noise since.
