what happened here? I'm stumped.

purchased last year.
drained atf out and put in dino dex III. van takes exactly 4L to get to middle of hot level on transmission dipstick.(after 30min. driving) since I've bought it, I've drained this thing 5 or 6 times with dino atf and ALWAYS drained out the exact 4L I put in it before.
due to a very positive experience with M1 ATF, I drained the van and put in 4L of M1. drove couple of days, drained again.(planned 3-4 drains.)
I somehow drained out 6.5L of atf.
next day, again, 6-6.5L.
what's going on here?
I always follow the same procedures.
van is driven minimum 30min. front end raised with same jack, same spot on the driveway, dipstick out, drain until NOTHING is coming out. I drive min. 30 min. to check level. from a clean pan, the drained fluid is put into empty windshield washer containers (4L). I've gone through it a million times in my head, and, I did not forget or miss anything.

any ideas?

Some anti drain back valve for the converter coincidentally (or incidentally) decided to take a lunch break RIGHT NOW.

Gary's theory is as sound as any I could think of.

I do however have one question for you. Why in the world are you replacing so much ATF in this thing

? Are you having problems with it? Or is this a normal maintenance ritual?

I think that he was flushing the old fluid out with a cheaper ATF, requiring that much to purge the old stuff ..and then exchanged that with M1. He used a little more than he had to if he had just kept adding M1 to the sump and tapped off the cooler lines to drain. This would have purged the old stuff without the dilution factor having to be compensated for with more fluid.

Still effective.

He was practicing ATF booemia (binge and purge)

btw-if you don't have that stuff mixed with motor oil ..and you have an oil fired furnace ..go ahead and dump it in the tank.

feb. 04-got van immediately drained atf 4X.
april o4-auto rx transmission
may o4-drained atf 4X
jan 05-drained with M1 atf 4X

there were/are no issues with transmission. anything I buy used, I multiple drain all fluids thoroughly. auto rx used as preventative maintenance also.
